Dear Mathi,

The 'Fruit fly' that is used in genetics research is named as 'Drosophila Melanogaster' , which means 'dark-bellied dew lover'(in Greek)

This fly is extensively used for study in Biology,genetics and life sciences,as it is easy to maintain and reproduces quickly.The changes that the scientists want to discover,can be easily visible and distinguished by these flies.For example,if a gene relating to wing color is changed from green to blue,the flies born after this gene manipulation develops wings which are of blue color.This helps to know which kind of genes effects which characteristics.

These are the flies that are seen around cut open fruits,honey,vinegar,etc.

It is used because of its speed of reproduction and its four large-paired chromosomes.
