Santhara (also Sallekhana, is the Jain(Jainism) practice of voluntary and systematic fasting to death. High court of Rajasthan said that it is sucide. But Jain community said that it is way of attaining moksha. What is right?

According to Jain community, Santhara is an ancient religious practice and its aim is self purification. In their veiw, it is not giving up of life but taking death in their stride. Actually, it is very difficult to argue that whether santhara is suicide or it is something different from suicide. In the end, death is the objective of both these concepts. In Jain religion, the people who are in the last phase of their life who are either sick or suffering from any serious disease, starve themselves to death. But in the view of human right activists, it is a social evil and the family members do not want to take care of the old members of their family because of variety of reasons and do they so they compel the old people to undertake santhara.

But is this choice of death actually as black and white? That is now a matter of debate since the Rajasthan High Court last month held santhara illegal, making it punishable under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 309 (attempted suicide) of the IPC, terming it equivalent to suicide. The bench also held that santhara was not an "essential religious practice" of Jain religion. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/the-rite-death-santhara-jain/#sthash.3SrlTql0.dpuf
Santhara, also called 'Pandit-maran', 'Sallekhana' and 'Sakham-maran', is believed to have been practised since the foundation of Jainism and finds mention in its agams (religious texts). As per the Jain Yuva Sangh, the Pratikramana Sutra in Shravaka Anuvrata (the code of conduct for Jains) clearly explains santhara, saying that when all purposes of life have been served, or when the body is unable to serve any more purpose, a person can opt for it. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/the-rite-death-santhara-jain/#sthash.3SrlTql0.dpuf

God has given us life. Therefore, He is the only one, who has the right to take away the life of ours. We do not have the right to spoil our life. What the sick and old people of Jain religion is doing is a kind of suicide. Of course, this is a kind of social evil. We have to stop these kind of crimes from the earth. If people are sick, admit them to the hospital. Doctors can give treatment for them for their diseases. There are number of old age homes are around us. If the family members are not possible to look after the old people accommodate them in old age homes. Never motivate to continue such evil practices. We have the right to fight against them for stopping such unnecessary religious customs.

You are right,I am agree but it is matter of believe and faith. Any matter relating to religion is senstive issue in India and whole world. High court is Rajasthan banned it but the practice is not stopped. Government is also silent on it.
