Imagination Is More Important Than Knowledge

An elaboration of the famous quote by Sir Einstein, "Imagination is more important than knowledge"

Imagination is more important than knowledge. It is a famous quotation by an all time famous, popular and well known scientist, "Einstein". To begin with, it will not be a good option to not agree with the topic as the person who said this is often known as the smartest man to have ever walked on the planet. However, even rationally speaking and on the basis of proofs and evidence, it can be proven that the man was indeed right and there is no argument over the fact that imagination is indeed more important than knowledge.
In routine life, knowledge enjoys a lot of importance. Think about the peers around you, what do they tell you all the time? Do they inspire you to start imagining? Or do they stick to the boring, conservational and orthodox opinion asking you to study and gain knowledge? I am sure it's the latter one. But this does not imply in any way that imagination is not important and knowledge is the only thing which is required to be successful in the world. As a matter of fact, it will be quite safe to say that imagination plays an even vital role than knowledge. There is no doubt that knowledge is important, but its importance comes only after imagination which is the very basis of creation. Putting knowledge before imagination is nothing more than a stereotype.
In everyday life, the importance of imagination is always suppressed by knowledge and it is underrated while in reality, it can be very easily proven with the help of couple of examples and situations that imagination comes before knowledge. Everyone likes creative people, don't they? Have you ever wondered what is the very basis and power of creativity? Without a doubt its imagination. Whenever a new thing is to be invented, the very first step to be taken is the imagination and then only knowledge is utilized to put the imagination to life, to implement it and fulfill what you dreamt of.

Technically speaking, knowledge is something of the past. When you talk about knowledge, you are referring to all the books which are already written and are available in the libraries. Therefore, in order to gain knowledge, all you need is study, study and only study which is quite boring. But imagination, that is something associated to your brain. It won't be wrong to say that imagination is more like a skill. Knowledge tells you what has already been invented and how to use it. But imagination inspires you to make something new of your own and define how you are going to use it.

Take an example of fashion designing. What do you think is the basis of fashion designing? It it knowledge or is it imagination? For sure, it is imagination. The multimillionaire industry of fashion designing is completely based on imagination with knowledge either playing a little or no role at all in it.

Similarly, take an example of a desktop computer and a laptop. Both uses the same technology and works in essentially the same manner. But still, laptop is a gigantic facility as compared to that of a desktop computer due to its portability.. Since they work on the same principles so it is safe to say that the knowledge to make both of them have been there. But it was only the imagination of a brilliant mind that came up with an idea of potable wireless computers and then only were they made.

Similar can be the example of phones. In the beginning, we had the wired phones that could only make a call. But now, we have a cell phone which is wireless, it has a camera integrated into its chip, it can be used for emails, texts, multimedia and what not, all in one. And again, the technological knowledge to build such a thing has always been there. But it took us the time of finding a genius mind to imagine and build up an idea to make such an all in one device or a gadget.

The aforementioned examples are enough to say that imagination in real life plays a more important role than knowledge. Because imagination is the very basis of everything. You can't go out using your knowledge without imagination. And if you do, your knowledge will always stay stagnant. Therefore, imagination is what can be considered as something which opens new horizons and inspires to invent and create new stuff which can take part in facilitating human life and make it comfortable and luxurious at a lavish scale. So no matter how less of an importance imagination enjoys, you can't be defiant of the fact that you always "THINK" and then you "DO" which implies you always imagine and then apply the knowledge to bring your imagination to life which concludes that imagination is the very first step of creation. Everything else comes later.

I agree that imagination is more important than knowledge but this is not applicable to all situations and not everyone has the ability to bring what they imagine to life.
Imagination is necessary to make something new or improve upon something that already exists but the chances of failure are high if you do not have the requisite knowledge to bring about the required change.
Therefore, you may have a good imagination but it is of no use if you do not have the knowledge of how put your idea into practice.

Notwithstanding the fact that the quote is from someone as great as Einstein, I do not completely agree with it. Imagination has its role to play but without complementary knowledge, it remains a dream. There were many who imagined going to the moon but success came when people worked on the accumulated knowledge of many scientists over a period of centuries. Similarly, a laptop could not have been invented without the knowledge of the structure of a computer. So to say imagination is more important than knowledge is belittling knowledge - it would be better to say imagination is equally important as knowledge.
