Viral hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of liver and it has become very common these days especially in monsoon season due to heavy rainfall in monsoon which provides favorable environment for hepatitis virus to flourish. It is very rapidly spreading in world today. It spreads through various routes but its most common routes of spread are unhygienic environmental surroundings near residential area, contaminated water, contaminated food and spread through transfusion of infected blood from infected person during blood transfusion.

Viral hepatitis as the name self explain, self answer is caused by virus. The viruses which cause viral hepatitis are of different types namely Hepatitis A Virus, Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, Hepatitis D Virus and Hepatitis E Virus on basis of which different types of viral hepatitis are named. Therefore, classification of viral hepatitis based on causative viruses into different types is as follow:-

1. Hepatitis A - which is caused by hepatitis A virus.

2. Hepatitis B - which is caused by hepatitis B virus.

3. Hepatitis C - is third type of viral hepatitis which is caused by hepatitis C virus.

4. Hepatitis D - is fourth type of viral hepatitis caused by hepatitis D virus.

5. Hepatitis E - which is last type of viral hepatitis which is the fifth type of viral hepatitis is caused by hepatitis E virus.

The viral hepatitis is thus classified into above five types based on the causative viruses which cause the above five types of hepatitis. But there is another classification in which viral hepatitis is classified into two different types which are commonly known types of viral hepatitis based on duration of disease are:-

1. Acute viral hepatitis.

2. Chronic viral hepatitis.

1. Acute viral hepatitis -
Acute viral hepatitis is a type of viral hepatitis in which viral hepatitis which has occurred to patient is of recent origin and not of more than six months duration, infact it is of less than six months duration. And infact, one more thing about acute viral hepatitis that it can be caused by any of the above five types of viruses that is hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis D virus or hepatitis E virus.

2. Chronic viral hepatitis -

Viral hepatitis is called Chronic Viral Hepatitis when viral hepatitis which has occurred to patient last more than six months that is this is of more than six months duration. And another one differentiating point which differentiates it from acute viral hepatitis is that chronic viral hepatitis is usually caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus. Delta virus that is hepatitis D virus can infect only those people who are already infected with hepatitis B virus that is it can infect only those people who are already suffering from hepatitis B.

Now third classification of viral hepatitis in which viral hepatitis is classified into very common two types based on route of spread of infection known by the names of:-

1. Water borne hepatitis.

2. Blood borne hepatitis.

1. Water borne hepatitis -

Water borne hepatitis include those types of viral hepatitis which spread through drinking contaminated water, unhygienic water source from where people take water for usage, contaminated water supply which is most commonly found in monsoon season. The types of viral hepatitis which come under water borne hepatitis or spread through contaminated water are hepatitis A and hepatitis E.

2. Blood borne hepatitis -

Blood borne hepatitis includes those types of viral hepatitis which spread through transfusion of hepatitis virus infected blood, using hepatitis virus infected needles, accidentally using hepatitis virus infected blood transfusion and haemodialysis tools in hospitals without purifying them with disinfectants, intravenous drug users who share hepatitis virus infected needles from hepatitis virus infected person without being aware of needles being infected from hepatitis carrying person when they were sharing needles with them. Health workers, doctors, nurses are at more risk of catching infection due to accidental needle prick injury during giving medicinal injections to infected people. The most common types of viral hepatitis which spread through infected blood route are hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatitis D. So the three types of viral hepatitis which are included in blood borne hepatitis category are hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatitis D.

So these were all three classification of viral hepatitis into various types in which hepatitis is classified into various types based on their route of spread of infection, duration of infection and based on causative virus of viral hepatitis.
