Safety Precautions when you leave home

There was a time back in the good old days when people never bothered to lock their front doors even when they went to sleep at night. Can one imagine doing that now even when people are at home but doing their own thing. Times have changed for the worse and no amount of care and caution is enough to safeguard our belongings and even lives.

It is better to be aware of all the dangers involved and make sure that every aspect has been considered because there is no second chance where safety is concerned. In today's scenario , in cities both the couple work , children go to school and in most cases the house remains locked and vacant all through the day. Probably this may be the case with your neighbors as well, which means that the field is open for those having devious intentions.

I am listing down some precautions we can take on a daily basis, when we go for vacations - both short and long.

Precautions to be taken while you are away during the day time

1, Make sure that all the doors have been properly secured. The front door, the back door and if possible, individually lock up the bedrooms too.

2, Check the stove and your kitchen before leaving home. Many accidents relating to fire take place because of carelessness. Sometimes when we are pressed for time we may forget that we have kept milk or he curry for boiling on the stove and rush out. One can imagine what would happen if it remains so until evening.

3, It is a good idea to have an additional sturdy grill door fixed to the main and back entrance to secure your house further.

4, Never leave any valuables or large amounts of cash at home. Make it a habit to withdraw only what is required and keep all jewelry, silverware and important papers and documents in a bank locker.

5, If children come before you do train them to lock the door behind them and remain inside until you come home. Many thefts take place when children go out to play leaving the front door open.

6, If you have a live in maid with you, make sure that you have instructed her properly about safety. You will have to make sure that your house and its contents remain safe from her as well. It is better not to employ anyone unless you are doubly sure about the credentials and get some feedback from the previous employers .

7, Last but not least try to keep in touch with your family at all times especially if the children are going to be on their own for a few hours.

Precautions to be taken when you are going to be away for a long period of time

1, Securing the house is a must of course. It is also a good idea to install an alarm system as well and get it connected to the local police station. If you don't have an alarm system you can at least inform the police so that they are aware of your absence and keep watch over you house during their night beats.

2, Make sure that all the valuables have been put away at the bank. Many people think that it is alright as long as they have out away the ornaments in their wardrobe locker. But they forget to realise that the intruder or the burglar has all the time in the world to break open the door lock and the locker.

3, It is always a good idea to ask your maid to come in every day during your absence and clean the front yard and generally keep an eye on the house and its surroundings. Leave your phone number and a relative or a friends number living in the same city as you , with your maid or your neighbor so that they can get in touch with them during an emergency.

4, Never leave your dog or cat at home. Not only is it inhuman to do that but also dangerous. Make sure that they are left in a kennel or someone who could look after them during your absence.

5, Leave the front porch light and a light at the back of your house for additional safety. It deters would be thieves since they will be visible under the light.

6, There have been cases where the family left the house in the care of their live in maid or a relative and found several things missing or robbed completely with the help of an accomplice. It is best to lock up the house unless you are 100% sure of the person with whom you intend to leave the house.

7, Last but not least make a check list of all that needs to be done before you close your house for a few days.Just before you leave, start by taking an inventory of the house - make sure that the gas is off, all lights have been switched off except the ones you want to leave on, the rooms locked and secured , water taps shut tightly, all open holes plugged in so that you don't find the house infested with rats ,snakes or other insects that come in through pipelines.
Make sure to close washing machine outlets and any other outlet that is open with tightly packed plastic covers which can be removed easily once you are back.

There are any number of security measures available these days and it is for our own benefit. We should make use of whatever is suitable and within our budget and reach instead of taking the safety of our house for granted.
