Like other body functions and processes hormones do regulate bone growth and functions. And defective secretion of hormones can cause various defects in process of bone growth and can affect person''s height.
We know that hormones regulate various functions of human body. It regulates various processes occurring inside human body for its healthy and effective functioning and to keep it free from various disorders and diseases. But, when, there occurs abnormal secretion of hormones inside human body, also known as hormonal disorders, then, it causes, imbalance in processes and functions of human body which were previously regulated by hormones.
Like other body functions and processes hormones do regulate bone growth and functions. And defective secretion of hormones can cause various defects in process of bone growth and can affect person's height. There are certain specific hormonal disorders or abnormalities in which there occurs abnormal secretion of hormones which can affect bone growth. The various hormonal abnormalities or disorders in which there occurs abnormal secretion of hormones which affect bone growth are-
2. Pituitary dwarfism.
Giantism is a hormonal disorder in which there occurs excessive secretion of human growth hormone from anterior lobe of pituitary gland during childhood which is more than normal secretion or quantity of human growth hormone required by human body. Now, this excessive secretion of human growth hormone which occurs during childhood in giantism disease causes excessive bone growth which results in excessive lengthening of bones and thus results in excessively long and heavy bones which causes abnormal increase in height of a person which is not normal and person becomes much taller and heavier than normal human being.
2. Pituitary dwarfism-
Pituitary dwarfism is a hormonal disorder in which height of a person does not increase, infact it is less than the normal height of human beings. This occurs due to under-secretion of human growth hormone, that is, due to very less secretion of human growth hormone during childhood which occurs in this hormonal disorder, pituitary dwarfism. Due to low, very less secretion of human growth hormone from anterior pituitary lobe of pituitary gland, less insulin like growth factors are secreted and less insulin like growth factors causes stimulation of very less osteoblasts and less osteoblasts activity results in lesser bone growth and lesser bone growth causes less increase in height of person which is less than normal and hence person remain short stature, person has normal sized head, torso but has small limbs, which causes less increase in height.
Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder in which there occurs over-secretion of human growth hormone during adulthood when the epiphyseal plates which are growth plates of human bones gets closed and there is no space for length wise enlargement or increase of bone growth in length and therefore, bones increase in thickness and not in height, which results in increase in thickness of bones of hands, feet and jaws of mouth and other tissues of human body also enlarge due to excessive secretion of human growth hormone after closure of epiphyseal plates of human bones during adulthood. Eyelids, lips, tongue and nose also enlarge, skin thickens and there develops furrows in skin especially of forehead and soles. Person becomes obese and bones of person become abnormally heavy and thick bones which more than normal heaviness and thickness of bones required by human body.
