Absent Seizure is characterized by a sudden lapse of consciousness. This lapse of consciousness is just brief. Absent seizure is also known as petit mal. Petit mal is more common in children than adults. When absent seizure occurs, the person involved will look like that he is staring into space for a few seconds. Absent seizures cannot be interrupted by voice or touch.

Compared with other epileptic seizures, absent seizure appears mild. But it can be deadly. Children who are identified with absent seizure disorder should be given proper care while swimming or bathing as there is a dangerous of drowning. Adults with absent seizures should be prevented from driving vehicles.

Signs of Absent Seizure:

The signs of absent seizure include the following:

* Vacant stare
* Absence of motion without falling
* Lip smacking
* Eyelid flutters
* Chewing motions
* Hand movements
* Small movements of both arms

Absent seizures just last for a few seconds only. So the recovery is instantaneous. After recovery, the person who is just affected by absent seizure, forgets the memory of the incident. Some most unfortunate ones even experience absent seizures at least a dozen times daily.

Causes:

In general, seizures are caused by abnormal activity of neuron (nerve cell) in the brain. These cells are connected by synapses. Neurons communicate with each other by sending electrical and chemical signals. In people having absent seizure, these electrical signals repeat themselves over and over in a three second pattern. There is also a possibility of hyperventilation triggering absent seizures.

Complications:

Absent seizures usually occur in children. These children may outgrow absent seizures over months and years. But some experience absent seizures throughout their life. They may even experience full convulsions ultimately. Children will also suffer from learning difficulties.

Treatment and Drugs:

There are medications for absent seizures. These medications are capable of eliminating absent seizures or they will reduce the number of occurrences. Trial and error method is used to determine the right medication and dosage. Usually ethosuximide (Zarontin) is the first drug prescribed for absent seizure. Other drugs such as valproic acid (Depakene, Stavzor) and lamotrigine (Lamictal) are also effective.
