Some Facts About Diabetes

One has to remember that this disease is a life style disease and it is in your hand to manage it through some positive changes in your life style.



According to the medical dictionary , the word "diabetes" is derived from Greek language for 'siphon' which refers to the uncontrolled urination in severe cases of diabetes. There are three types of diabetes -Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes kills one person every six seconds and afflicts 382 million people worldwide and an even more worrisome fact is that one in ten of the world's population will have diabetes by 2035 according to researchers.
That is reason enough for anyone to start analysing one's life style and do the needful so that you stay as far away from the disease as possible. Diabetes prevention is possible by adopting some healthy lifestyle habits and paying special attention to specific preventable diabetes complications associated with this disease.

The five countries with the highest percentage of diabetes are Nauru (an island in the south pacific), United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait. However, India has the world's highest diabetes population with over 35 million people suffering with diabetes. By 2025, this number is expected to go up to 70 million, meaning every fifth diabetic in the world would be an Indian. One wonders whether it is because of the food habit or life style? Or is it because of both ?

Some common symptoms and cures

Normally symptoms such as severe increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, tingling of your hands or feet are all associated with Diabetes and your doctor would definitely run a test for diabetes. Normally Oral Glucose Tolerance Test ( OGTT ) is carried out to determine this.

Since obesity has led to a dramatic increase in type 2 diabetes ,the best cure that you can give yourself is to control weight, - lose weight if you are overweight and also carefully look into your diet .

According to some studies eating one serving of cooked oatmeal two to four times a week reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16% . One serving five or six times a week was brought in a reduction of 39% risk. So diet has a lot to do with controlling the disease.

Since the major cause of increase in the incidence of diabetes is a sedentary lifestyle one can easily rectify that. Exercise and diet can either reduce or delay the incidence of diabetes by over 50%. There are cases where an active life style has made individuals withstand negative factors like heredity.

Managing diabetes

Diabetes really is something that needs to be managed. Managing your diabetes and keep worrying about it will affect your health as you grow older. One has to remember that this disease is a life style disease and it is in your hand to manage it well by making some positive changes in your life style.

1, First of all ,do not skip any meals if you are a diabetic. Doing that will cause you to become more hungry when it is time to eat and you will probably end up eating much more than you would have otherwise. This becomes a vicious cycle and will lead to higher than usual blood sugar levels so it should be avoided at all cost. Be disciplined and regular in your eating habits. This way your glucose and blood sugar levels remain steady !

2, If and when you notice any sores, cuts or blisters that do not heal, consult your physician immediately . Because diabetes can cause nerve damage or decrease blood flow to the feet. What begins as a minor issue can become serious as infection spreads and perhaps even lead to amputation.

3, Educate your family about diabetes and let them know about the disease. If you are a insulin dependent diabetic , it is important for you to teach your friends and family about how to properly inject the insulin. It is better to involve the entire family in this exercise. There may be instances when you are not able to inject yourself, someone need to be able to inject it for you. This could be a life saving lesson for you.

4, Don't get depressed and feel negative about your state because this can cause a lot of damage to your system. Instead remain positive and gain as much knowledge as possible about the disease by reading and also adopting a lifestyle that is favorable.

5, Make sure that you never miss your exercise routine. This is a life saver for diabetics. I have known several cases of severe diabetics who managed to control the sugar levels and remained healthy by being regular in their exercise routine. Yoga, brisk walking or any other form of exercise that burns fat and calories and invigorates your system is good for you.

6, Leading an active life style is the best form of treatment for diabetes. When you adopt a healthy life style that incorporates all the above tips and eating a fat free sensible meal regularly and at the same time each day and being regular in taking your medications and sticking to your exercise routine and also being watchful for any symptom that seems out of the way help you remain in good form.
