Spinach -- Healthy Recipe

Spinach - How to prepare


2 packets frozen spinach, thawed
1" cube of ginger, finely diced
Shukhno lonka (dry red chilli) - 3
Dash of Hing (Asafoetida)
Potatoes - about 4 medium-large ones
Kasoori Methi (Dried fenugreek leaves)
Mouri/Saunf (Fennel seeds)
Salt to taste

Cut the potatoes into small pieces, and then either lightly boil them or microwave them for about 8 min. Heat oil, preferably in a wok or kAdAi. To the hot oil, add ginger, hing, and fennel seeds. Add the spinach, and fry on a high flame. After about 5 min of frying, add salt, the dried chillies, and the potatoes. Mix evenly, and add the kasoori methi - then fry for a few minutes. At this point, you might add a little water if you so desire. Serve hot and enjoy !!

Spinach Dal- a two in one dish to cherish with rice.

Wash 2 bundles of spinach. Cut off the roots.
Moong dal - A hand full.
Coconut - 1/2 coconut grated.
Dry Chillies = 2
Cummin Seeds - Jeera - 1 tespoon.
Salt to tast.
Oil - 1 teaspoon for garnishing.
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Urad dal - 1 teaspoon
Cornflour - 1 teaspoon for blending.


Wash the Spinach, (Palak) nicely, chop it nicely, wash the moong dal and put these two in pressure cooker with say half a cup of water. Place the whistle and put it on gas stove.
Remove after one whistle.

Grate the coconut, jeera and dry chiliies to paste in a mixture and pour it in the cooked spinach. Add salt. Keep it back on the stove and let it blend in a low flame for about two minutes. Take the cornflour and make a thick paste and add to the spinach. Boil for a minute till the spinach, dal and the coconut masala blends together. Remove from the cooker and transfer it to a vessel.

Remove from Gas. Heat oil and add mustard seeds and urad dal, and a pinch of Asofotida(Hing) and pour it in the Spinach Dal.

You can mix it with steaming hot rice, with a teaspoon of ghee and enjoy the two in one dish.

Spinach is a cheap vegetable and rich in nutrients. It can be taken atleast once in a week during summer season as it reduces the body temperature and prevents from getting problems due to heat.

In canada I have seen a Indian food caterer supplies spinach Pakoda to the Indian food counters and maximum of the buyer of those Pakodas are canadian as they believe it is full of calcium which helps man to improve sperms,as canada is a cold country they need to eat more and more calcium and iron included foods.

Spinach pakoda:

Cumin powder
Chat masala
oil for fry

Procedure:cut spinach ,onion,and potato then wash it of.
Put chickpeas flour in that,then put cumin powder and chat masala and salt as per taste then put water to mix it,make the paste little thick.

Heat the pan and put oil then fry it and serve hot with Tomato ketch up.

As it is a tasty and healthy food you get double benefit of this

yes, i agree with kalyani. whenever i see spinach i remember popeye which i used to watch when i was younger. i read somewhere that spinach i really good for the body. it works in the body to promote healthy skin and vision and also promotes healthy cells. It is a very good source of iron, vitamin C and potassium. i also helps to reduce heart disease.

little more information about spinach.

100gms of spinach contains 188% vitamin A and 47% vitamin C.

better source of folate and carotenoids like lutein and Zeaxanthin0

and more over easily and abundantly available.More economical too.

Spinach as popularized in the cartoon series of "Popeye" is in fact really a nutritious food. Many don't know this and many are taking this vegetable for granted. Hope that the recipes above can be tried by readers of this post and gain its healthy benefit. i myself will try one of this recipe.

Nice this looks really good I will try some of the different ingredients that are listed here. I actually love spinach, but I know some people that do not because of the taste. All I have to say if you do not try adding another type of ingredient to give it some more flavor as well.
