1, There was a time when people simply got rid of their old furniture and bought new ones - not anymore ! Today old furniture has gained a lot of respect and value since we have begun to realise that old is gold and needs to preserved. To get a new sheen and look for your old wooden furniture you can do the following. Boil water and add 2 or 3 spoonfuls of tea leaves and make a strong solution. To this add a pinch of powdered camphor. Rub this liquid on the furniture and leave it to dry. This is an excellent tip for bringing out the color and sheen of the furniture . The use of camphor also makes sure that termites and ants don't attack the furniture.
2, If you want your flowering plants to thrive and grow healthy, do the following - Collect used tea leaves in a tin and dry it in the sun for a day and spread it around the plant and water the plant. You can also put banana peels around the plant pressing it down into the soil . They are an excellent source of phosphorous and potassium.
3, Oil stains on clothes can look bad and tend to become permanent if steps are not taken. Apply curd over the area and leave for about half an hour and apply soap and scrub thoroughly before rinsing and drying the dress.
4, Clean lamp shades, fans, tube lights and light fittings with any detergent powder to which a table spoonful of cooking salt has been added. After cleaning it thoroughly dry with a dry cloth before switching it on.
5, To get a sheen on dull brass items do the following - Soak tamarind in a little warm water to which 1 teaspoonful of salt is added. Once the tamarind is soft and the salt is dissolved add a spoonful of any detergent powder and mix well. Apply this mixture on the brassware and leave it on for a minute and scrub well and wipe thoroughly with a clean soft cloth to get rid of any streaks.
6, If Nail polish accidentally gets spilled over the floor, the best way of removing it is to wipe it off using cotton dipped in nail polish remover . If you don't have nail polish remover you can use any deodorant or perfume on the stain and wipe it with a cloth.
1, If there is too much salt in the curry you can do the following - either add finely chopped tomatoes or a little lime juice and boil the curry once. You can also chop one small raw potato into 4 pieces and add it to the curry and boil it for a minute. The potato pieces absorb the extra salt.
2, When you are cooking Biriyani, before layering the meat and rice layer the bottom of the pan with Tej patta ( Bay leaves) so that the bottom does not get burnt. After you layer the rice and meat sprinkle some coriander leaves and mint leaves on top for extra flavor.
3, You can make a tasty salad dressing at home - Take a glass bottle with a tight screw top lid. Into this add 2 spoonfuls of olive oil, salt, pepper ,raw mustard paste , thick yogurt and finely chopped herbs ( coriander or any herb f your choice ). Shake the bottle vigorously until the mixture turns creamy and pour over the cut vegetables.
4, If the dosa batter has turned sour you can add some sugar and two or three slices of bread dipped in warm milk and mashed thoroughly. Mix this well into the batter and you will see the difference in taste.
1, Olive oil is excellent for hair. Apply into the roots and massage your scalp and leave it for 2-3 hours. Shampoo as usual and there will not be any need to use a conditioner since the hair turns naturally smooth and silky.
2, If you have brittle nails you need to drink milk and plenty of water. Massage your nails with a mixture of butter and olive oil. Spread it on your hands too since this mixture makes your nails stronger, shiny and the skin on your hand soft and silky.
3, If you have dark circles around your eyes try doing this - mix cucumber juice and almond oil in equal quantities and keep the mixture refrigerated. Apply this every night around your eyes before you sleep. When you do this continuously you can see the difference in two or three weeks time.
4, Deep breathing exercise does wonders for your lungs and also for your skin. It tightens the skin and slows down the ageing process. Breathe in deeply and breath out slowly so that you get all the stale air out of your lungs and blood system. You can keep doing this whenever you can, even when you are in the office, taking a couple of minutes to breathe in and out a few times. The exercise rejuvenates your entire system.
