Health Benefits of Bananas:

Bananas are rich in potassium. An average banana contains about 500 milligrams of potassium. Potassium is a mineral which plays a vital role in maintaining proper heart function and regulating normal blood pressure. Bananas are also found to lower high blood pressure due to the presence of potassium.

Regular consumption of bananas decreases the risk of stroke by 40%. Potassium present in bananas is also good for bones and kidneys as the mineral inhibits calcium secretion in the urine and thus prevents the formation of kidney stones. If calcium secretion in the urine is suppressed, then the risk of developing osteoporosis and brittle bone diseases is also lowered.

Bananas are also important to maintain good eye sight. A study conducted in 2004 shows that bananas have the capacity to lower the risk of age related macular degeneration by 36%. Macular degeneration is the primary cause of vision loss in older people. The study also reveals that to get good results, you have to eat three or more servings of the fruit per day.

Bananas can ease depression. Experiments show that people suffering from depression feel much better after eating a banana. There is a type of protein called tryptophan present in bananas which gets converted into serotonin by the body. Serotonin helps the body to relax, improves mood and makes you happier.

Bananas are rich in dietary fibre. This fibre assists the foods which we eat to move smoothly through the digestive tract and aids in digestion. A couple of bananas are the best choice for constipation rather than laxatives. Bananas are rich in fructo-oligosaccharides. These fructo-oligosaccharides are fed by the friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. These bacteria help us absorb more nutrients.

Bananas are also good for preventing stomach ulcers. Compounds present in bananas form a thich protective layer in the stomach against hydrochloric acid. There are certain bacteria in the stomach which are responsible for causing stomach ulcers. Bananas contain protease inhibitors which destroy these bacteria.

Bananas are rich in Vitamin B6. The vitamin plays an important role in creating haemoglobin for healthy blood. Other functions of Vitamin B6 include maintaining proper blood sugar levels, synthesizing and breaking down amino acids and producing antibodies. One banana provides about one fifth of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin B6.

Bananas also function as natural antacids. If you are suffering from heartburns, eat bananas. Bananas are rich in iron. So they may perform miracles in anaemic patients. If you are suffering from hangover, try a couple of bananas blended with milk or berries. This will surely make a good recovery drink.
