Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea is native to China and India. It is praised for its various health benefits. Due to the diverse health benefits of green tea, it is consumed by people all over the world. The tea occupies the first position in the list of most consumed beverages in the world.

Least processed tea:

Un-oxidised leaves are used to make green tea. It is also the least processed tea among other tea varieties. Hence green tea is abundant in antioxidants and polyphenols.

Used in traditional medicinal system:

In ancient times in India and China, green tea had found a remarkable place in the traditional medicinal system. Green tea had been used to control bleeding, heal wounds, regulate body temperature, aid in digestion, improve heart and mental health.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties:

The polyphenols present in green tea are considered to provide anti-inflammatory and anti carcinogenic properties to the tea.

Slows ageing:

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate is a bioactive polyphenol in tea and it plays an important role in eliminating free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for wrinkles and skin ageing. Due to the elimination of free radicals ageing is slowed.

Caffeine content:

Unbrewed green tea has zero calories. The caffeine content in green tea is also lower when compared with black tea and coffee. The caffeine content in green tea is about 20 milligrams for an 8 oz cup. The amount is about 50 mgs in black tea and 95 mgs in coffee.

Reduces cancer risks:

One of the most important benefits of green tea is its role in reducing cancer risks. The antioxidants present in green tea are said to protect the cells from damage thus reducing cancer risks. These antioxidants are also more effective than Vitamin C and E.

Prevents heart ailments and stroke:

Green tea assists in preventing heart ailments and stroke by lowering cholesterol levels. Green tea is recommended for patients recovering from heart attacks because green tea prevents cell deaths and boosts up the recovery of heart cells.

Burns fat:

Green tea burns fat and boosts metabolism rate. It helps to burn about 70 calories in one day. This adds up to 7 pounds in a year. Hence green tea is good for people who wish to lose weight.

Reduces rheumatoid arthritis risk:

Green tea reduces the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. It blocks the enzyme responsible for the destruction of cartilage. Green tea also finds a role in maintaining bone density.

Memory booster:

Green tea is a good memory booster. So it is believed that green tea can be used to slow Alzheimer's disease although there is no cure for Alzheimer's.

Prevents high blood pressure:

Regular consumption of green tea suppresses angiotensin, a factor leading to high blood pressure. So green tea helps to prevent high blood pressure.

Prevents tooth decay:

The bacteria and viruses responsible for dental problems and bad breath are destroyed by regular tea consumption.

Reduces type 2 diabetes risk:

Some experiments also show that green tea reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. Green tea prevents rapid increase in blood sugar level by improving lipid and glucose metabolism.
