Earth is the third planet from the Sun. It is the only inhabitable planet in the solar system. Earth is also called as the ''Blue Planet'' due to the high amount of water content. In this post, I wish to share some fascinating facts about Earth.

         

Earth is the third planet from the Sun. It is the only inhabitable planet in the solar system. Earth is also called as the 'Blue Planet' due to the high amount of water content. In this post, I wish to share some fascinating facts about Earth.



* The time taken by earth to rotate on its own axis once is known as a day. We assume that there are 24 hours in a day. But the truth is there are 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds in a day.

* More than 8.6 million lightnings strike the earth every day.

* Of the total amount of water present in earth, 97% is salt water and cannot be used for drinking purposes.

* Everyday nearly 100 tons of small meteorites enter our atmosphere.

* There is gold in sea water. But this amount extremely small as one litre of sea water contains just 13 billionth of a gram of gold. But earth's core is abundant of gold. 99% of the total gold present in earth lies in earth's core. But it is impossible to extract this gold.

* Many volcanoes are present in oceans. 90% of the total volcanic activity of earth occurs in oceans.

* The temperature of earth's core is 5500 °C. It is equal to the temperature of the surface of the Sun.

* The driest place on earth is Dry Valleys. It is found in Antarctica. The interesting fact about this place is that 2 million years have passed since the last rainfall here.

* The continents are always on the move. They cover a distance of about 2cm every year.

* Of the total species present in earth, only 14% have been identified.

* Every second 2 people die and approximately 2,00,000 children are born every day.
