Health Benefits of Guava

Guavas are natives to South America. But now they are cultivated in the tropics and subtropics in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, subtropical regions of North America, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and Spain. It is believed that Guavas were brought to India by the Portuguese. Guavas have many nutritional benefits. Some of these benefits are discussed in this post.

Helps to improve immunity:

Guavas are rich sources of Vitamin C. A guava contains nearly 4 times more Vitamin C than that present in an orange. Vitamin C is vital to improve the immunity of your body. So eating guavas help to keep your body healthy and protect the body from harmful pathogens.

Helps to improve hormonal functions:

Guavas contain copper. Copper helps in the production and absorption of hormones and thus leads to improving the functions of the endocrine system especially copper is important to maintain good functioning of the thyroid gland. Thyroid gland nonfunctioning causes series problems in metabolism and use of energy.

Improves brain health:

Guavas contain Vitamins B3 and B6. These Vitamins are also known as niacin and pyridoxine. Vitamin B3 and Vitamin B6 help in improving blood circulation to the brain. The brain nerves are relaxed due to the increased blood circulation. Hence guavas are good for your brain.

Treats constipation:

If food gets stuck in the colon, constipation occurs. Due to the rich fibre content in guavas, they help in treating constipation by clearing the blocked pathway.

Recommended for pregnant mothers:

Guavas contain folic acid and Vitamin B9. These nutrients are important for as they assists in the development of the nervous system of the baby and also protect the new-born ones from neurological disorders. Hence guavas are recommended for pregnant mothers.

Can be eaten by diabetic patients:

Guavas contain good fibre content. They also have a low glycemic index. Due to these properties, guavas can be eaten by people suffering from diabetes and also by those who wish to prevent diabetes. When you are suffering from diabetes, the glucose content in the body is not absorbed due to the non-production of insulin. Hence fruits and vegetables rich in fibre are recommended for diabetic patients.

Reduces cancer risk:

As we have already seen, guavas are rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is needed to protect the cells from damage. Guavas also contain antioxidants like lycopene which also assists in the process of preventing cell damage. Reduced cell damage reduces the risk of cancer. Moreover Vitamin C is vital for the immunity of the body to fight against the cancer cells.

Improves vision:

Guavas contain Vitamin A though the amount of Vitamin A present is not equal to that of which present in carrots. But eating guavas regularly provides the required amount of Vitamin A necessary to maintain good vision.

Makes you look younger:

Guavas are rich sources of Vitamins A and C and antioxidants like lycopene and carotene. These nutrients help in protecting the skin from wrinkles and fine lines. This makes you look younger. Old age cannot be avoided. But you can prolong that by eating one guava a day.

Makes you feel relaxed:

Guavas contain magnesium. Magnesium plays a vital role in relaxing the muscles and nerves. Hence it is a good idea to eat a guava whenever you are stressed.
