Health Benefits of Milk

Milk is an important part of our diet. When we are younger we drink a few glasses of milk everyday. But as we get older, the amount of milk consumption decreases drastically. Some think that milk adds extra fat to their body and stop drinking it. Milk is a wonderful drink. It is a great source of vitamins and other nutrients. Some health benefits of milk are discussed in this post.

Milk for healthy bones

Milk is very good for bones as it is a rich source of calcium. Calcium, phosphorous, protein and magnesium present in milk is necessary for bone development. Drinking milk daily makes your bones stronger. Regular consumption of milk from childhood helps to keep the bones stronger even at old age and also protects against diseases like osteoporosis.

Milk for stronger teeth

Milk also finds importance in making the teeth stronger and protecting the teeth from cavities and tooth decay. Casein is the most abundant protein in milk. This protein forms a thin layer over the enamel. There will be loss of calcium and phosphate from the enamel when the teeth are exposed acids in the mouth. The layer formed by casein prevents this loss.

Milk relieves stress

Milk is a very good stress buster. A glass of warm milk helps to relax the muscles and sooth the frayed nerves. Milk also boosts energy.

Milk lowers cardiovascular risks

Milk and other dairy consumption reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. High calcium content in milk is found to reduce bad cholesterol level in blood and increase good cholesterol level. Increased bad cholesterol level is a known risk factor of cardiovascular diseases.

Milk reduces obesity

It is a common belief that consuming milk leads to increase in weight. But researches show that people who consume milk regularly are slimmer than those who do not. This fat burning property of milk is more effective in the abdomen region.

Milk for glowing skin

Legends show that the Egyptian queen Cleopatra was used to having milk bath. This made her skin supple and glowing. But it is not necessary to take bath in milk to get glowing skin. If you regularly drink a few glasses of whole milk everyday, your skin will also glow. There are several nutrients in milk which are good your skin. Lactic acid present in acts as an exfoliant. There are enzymes in milk which make the skin smoother. Amino acids present in milk help in moisturising the skin. Antioxidants in milk protect the skin from environmental toxins. These benefits can be enjoyed by only those who are not sensitive to milk or dairy products. People who are lactose intolerant or sensitive to milk products should not consume milk as this aggravates the skin.

Milk lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes

Regular consumption of dairy products with low-fat reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. This is due to the combined effects of various nutrients present in milk including calcium and magnesium. Dairy products also have low glycemic index. Due to this property, they are helpful in controlling blood sugar level.

Milk and cancer

Regular intake of milk is associated with reduced risks of colorectal and breast cancer. There is a naturally occurring fat in dairy products known as Conjugated Linoleic Acid. This CLA along with calcium in milk provides protection against colon cancer.

Milk is a good and healthy drink. It is very necessary for our body. It is must for children. Milk is the main source of calcium. Calcium is very essential for our bones and teeth. If necessary, we can remove fat from the milk before we drink. Then we can escape from overweight. Those who don''t like to drink milk can use other dairy products like curd, butter milk ghee etc. for maintaining our body. Milk is a good cleanser. We can use curd and milk as a cleanser for our body. There is no side affect for these cleansers because they are natural and chemical free.
