psychoanalysis has proved extremely helpful in curing borderline cases although there are some criticisms against it because of the lengthy process involved..

Sigmund Freud who is hailed as the greatest psychologist of all times also came up with the psychodynamic approach to psychology which looks closely at the unconscious instincts and drives that motivate people to act in certain ways. We see that sometimes people react unexpectedly to a given situation rather than respond in a manner that seems to be the norm. It is all to do with many other factors most of them because of past experiences, state of mind and so on...

What is psycho analysis

By now it is accepted that our mind has a role to play and is responsible for both conscious and unconscious decisions based on drives and forces. Unconscious feelings like desire, hatred or repulsion motivate people to act accordingly. Human mind is a complex mechanism where the id, ego, and super ego control our feelings Each of us has these in fair measures, only the degree varies depending on our own experiences and mental makeup.

According to Sigmund Freud " people are simply actors in the drama of [their] own minds, pushed by desire, pulled by coincidence. Underneath the surface, our personalities represent the power struggle going on deep within us". This is what forms the basis for psycho analysis. Freud was of the opinion that when people bring out their unconscious thoughts and convert them into conscious thoughts and motivations , they are able to get insight and are able cure themselves of many minor mental problems and grievances.

Our unconscious mind is like a power control, that pulls strings and make us act and respond in a certain manner. All our daily actions are controlled and the factor that acts as trigger to do so resides in the unconscious mind, this despite other views that all our behaviors were conscious.

The unconscious mind positions itself in every aspect our life whether one is awake or dormant or asleep or sick, as long as the mind remains active. Though one may be unaware of the impact of the unconscious mind, it influences almost all the actions we engage in.

What it involves

It is analysing our actions that forms the basis of psycho analysis. Psycho analysis involves taking every single aspect of one's personality into account. Besides the inherited constitution of one's personality, a person's development is determined by events in early childhood.
We have certain irrational drives that are unconscious but they do have a lot to do in shaping our personality. Making one aware of these drives and other positive and negative forces is part of psycho analysis

There are always conflicts in our mind between conscious and unconscious, which can materialise in the form of mental or emotional disturbances. This may throw our entire life into imbalance .It is psycho analysis which brings out the sensitive issues and make us aware of the root cause of these struggles which provides a solution and also help an individual resolve his or her mental struggle. The liberation from the effects of the unconscious mind is achieved through bringing the matter successfully into the conscious mind . This what psycho analysis involves.

Psycho analysis is extremely helpful in treating depression and anxiety disorders , both of which stem from repressed thoughts. It is not an easy process for the psychiatrist to cure patients using psycho analysis since it involves main sessions and is a lengthy process. Since the psycho analyst is totally blank when he or she begins the healing process, it takes several sessions just to learn the symptoms, fears and other behavioral aspects before they can actually begin the analysis of the mind and bring out the sub conscious into the open.

Conclusions

There are many criticisms against psycho analysis as a cure for mental patients because of the lengthy process involved . The techniques involved too may not be sufficient to come to any conclusion. However Psycho analysis is a very good tool for individuals to use on a day today basis to keep our mind free of clutter and also analyse our dealings with other people and situations.

The purpose of psychoanalytic treatment is to help people change and progress in their lives. The development of self-awareness or insight into one's own self is a step in achieving that progress which would benefit us immensely.

According to analysts Psychoanalytic treatment gives patients the opportunity to examine any assumptions, they have about themselves or about others and understand their origins in their lives, modify them if necessary, and make better choices for themselves.
