All these are held once in four years. The host of this year's commonwealth game is our India.
The 19th Common wealth Games are to be held in New Delhi from October 3rd ,2010.Now the Queens Baton Relay is going on and last day the baton completed its progress through my state Kerala. It is similar to the Torch Relay of Olympics. The message from Common Wealth nations head is covered in the baton. The present head of Commonwealth is Queen Elizabeth of Britain. Commonwealth countries are those countries which were the colonies of Britain in past. India is one of the famous Commonwealth countries and is hosting the prestigious world meet for first time.
The journey of baton started from Buckingham Palace on October 29th last year . After 340 days journey covering 71 commonwealth countries spread over a distance of 190000 kilometers. The relay will end at Delhi Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium on October 3rd where the inaugural ceremony of the games will be held. When the message of the queen is read in the program , the Games will start officially.
The Queens Baton Relay was first introduced in 1958. Till 1994 the relay was conducted only in England and the host country only. The 1998 Kaulalampur games changed the traditions. Then onwards it started to conduct the Queens Baton Relay in all Commonwealth countries.
The Queens Baton Relay will cover one third of the world population before reaching Delhi. The Queens Baton Relay entered in India on June 25 through Waga , the boarder between India and Pakistan. The baton will relay through all the 28 Indian states and the 7 union territories. The total days of relay through India will be 100 days. It is estimated that it will cover 20000 kilometers within these days in India.
The baton of Queens Baton Relay has some peculiarities. The baton is made using Gold and Aluminium. The message of queen is inscribed in an 18 caret gold leaf. The national flag of the relay hosting country will always shine on the front of baton by using Light Emitting Diods ( LEDs ). There are 71 commonwealth countries in the world. So there will be 71 lights on the baton to symbolize the 71 commonwealth countries. The baton had a video camera on it itself. So the progress of the baton is always captured by it. Since GPS ( Global Positioning System ) tracker is attached on the baton the details of the Queens Baton Relay will be available in the commonwealth games website
