Potassium is one such mineral which helps in better functioning of the body mechanisms. Many of us are unaware of this fact and have a very limited intake of potassium rich food in our diets. Mostly it won't go up to the recommended daily levels, and this would lead to a bunch of health issues and other complications.

Role and Functions of Potassium
Potassium helps to maintain the fluid levels of the body. This mineral is responsible for regulating the water level balance and acid-alkaline base balance of blood and other tissues.

Potassium plays a vital role in proper growth of body and muscles. It helps in energy metabolism and converts glucose to glycogen, which is in turn stored in the liver for future use.

Potassium regulates the blood pressure. It has the capability of dilating the blood vessels there by maintaining stability.

Potassium plays a very important role in waste removing mechanisms of the kidney.
Potassium is the mineral which aids in sufficient supply of oxygen for brain cells. Thus it's an essential factor of nervous system.

A diet which is poor in potassium causes adverse effects to the health of the body, both physically and mentally. The various complications and health problems owing to the lower intake of potassium are as follows:

There are some health conditions which will cause to reduce the level of potassium in our body. Intake of certain medicines like aspirin, cortisone, diuretics will cause in excessive loss of potassium from the body. Other habits like alcoholism and excessive intake of caffeine also lowers the level of potassium considerably.

Sources of Potassium

1.The natural diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains are good sources of potassium. Since potassium is a water soluble mineral, it is easily lost from the body. Hence regular intake of potassium rich food becomes necessary.

2.Green leafy vegetables like spinach, lettuce, as well as peas, broccoli, potato, tomato are all rich in potassium content.

3.Fruits include oranges, lemon, apple, banana, avocado, apricots and raisins. While processing or canning food, a certain amount of potassium is said to be lost. Hence frozen fruits and vegetables are preferred.

4.Whole grains, sprouts, seeds, nuts, wheat germ are all rich in potassium.
Certain types of fish like salmon, sardine and most of the meat food materials contains potassium.

Potassium supplements are available today for those who find it difficult to cope up with the regular intake of nutrients and potassium rich food.
