Here is an article which describes the life of Great Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi who is honored as the father of our nation by us Indians, was born in Porbandar, Gujarat on October 2nd 1869. Indians call him 'Mahatma' which means great soul as a tribute to all his struggles and attempts he made in order to make India an independent nation. We also call him affectionately by the names, 'Bapuji' and 'Gandhiji'.

He was born in a conservative family. His father, Karamchand Gandhi was the dewan of Porbandhar at that time. His mother, Putlibai was a religious woman who left a huge impression on her son with her vows, fasts and beliefs. He was just an ordinary student at school. He married Kasturba, a girl at his same age when he was 13. Gandhiji went to London to study law at the University College and returned to India in 1891. By 1893, he was handling legal work in South Africa and was deeply moved by the denial of human rights for Indians by British. He spent his whole 21 years in South Africa, struggling for this noble cause.

In 1915 Gandhiji returned to India and became a part of Indian Nationalist Movement. His main weapons were Sathyagraha, Ahimsa and civil dis-obedience. Sathyagraha was build on principles of non-violence, truth and courage. Gandhiji was a great admirer of Leo Tolstoy and Henry David Thoreau. Their writings and principles had a profound influence on him.

Gandhiji lived a simple life. He refused all his earthly possessions and wore a simple plain loincloth and shawl. He used to spun clothes using a spinning wheel known as charka. Charka became a symbol for India, and it was used to retrieve to native Indian industries for eliminating poverty in lower classes. He devoted his whole life in his campaigns and struggle for independence. Quit India Movement, Dandi March, boycott of British goods were some of the campaigns that he led. Altogether he spent 7 years in jail, for his political activities.

Finally in 1947, India was granted Independence. In 1948 Jan 30th, at the age of 78, a fanatic named Nathuram Godse assassinated him. But he still lives in our hearts and as a tribute to him, October 2nd is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti throughout in India. Several cultural and social activities are conducted on that week, particularly on that day. Special prayer services and tributes are held especially at Raj Ghat, which is Gandhiji's memorial in Delhi.
