This article serves as a guide to correctly spell some of the words which are commonly misspelt and confused.
Words of daily usage, which are commonly misspelt-and tips to remember the correct spelling 1. Mischief : Here, the letters i and e play mischief and so do not appear in alphabetical order. Similar is the case with relief, chief, believe, thief. Even in the word 'friend' , i comes before e which can remembered as 'I am your friend' . However, in words such as Deceive and receive, the letters e and i do not deceive us and come in alphabetical order.
This can also be simply remembered by memorising the phrase 'i before e except after c' .
2. Occasion : This signifies the time to celebrate, and hence the word has a double c
Marriage: Your marriage occurs in this age, hence the word ends in 'age' and the double r indicates that the wedding extends for more than 1 day. 3. Accommodate : The word has double m and double c , signifying more room and comfort.
4. Opportunity : Here, o which is the starting letter of the word and p which is the next letter, occurs twice, signifying more chances.
5. Aggression : The double g and double s in aggression indicates greater fighting capacity.
6. Maintenance : This word is spelt with 'ten' in the middle
7. Possess : You have something in plenty, hence there are 4 of s
8. Acknowledge (in British English): This word has 'knowledge' in it.
9. Embarrass : When you are embarrassed, you feel like an 'ass' and hence, the word ends in 'ass' .
10. Perseverance : Perseverance means running for the objective and has the word 'ran' in it.
11. Inadvertent : The word ends in 'tent' .
12. Separate : The word, which means partition, has 'par' and 't' , split into two.
Words commonly confused * Here ... Hear: You hear with an ear and hence the word ends with 'ear'. While the other word is used to indicate place.
* Their ... There: The word 'there' signifies place, as it has 'here' in it.
* Weather... whether: The word 'Weather' has 'water' in it , thereby indicating climate, while 'whether' stands for choice
*Stationery ... stationary: Stationary means 'always there' and, therefore ends with 'ary' . Stationery, on the other hand, is the shop which sells paper.
* Principle ... principal: 'Principal' is your pal and therefore refers to the person while 'principle' means rule.
* compliment ... complement: 'Compliment' means 'praise'; both have an 'i' in them, while 'complement' is 'to complete'
