This article is written just to bring awareness of the deadly disease "CANCER" in the public.

CANCER : The number one killer disease is "Cancer" followed by the Heart disease and stroke.

The study and treatment of all kinds of Cancer is known as Oncology . The specialist who deals with cancer is called as "Oncologist".

Cancer is a disease characterized by multiplication of body cells. It may occur in any body tissue at any age. Cancerous cells when accumulate as growths are called malignant tumors , which penetrate, compress and destroy the surrounding normal tissue.

Tumors are masses of growths that arise from normal tissue. They are called as neoplasm. Tumors are classified into :
(a) Malignant tumors.
Malignant tumor growth is characteristically invasive and infiltrative.

(b) Benign Tumors .
Benign tumors are multiplied cells which resemble the parent cell grow slowly and the
tumor does not invade the surrounding tissue.

Classification of Cancerous Tumors:

1. Carcinomas :
They are solid tumors derived from the epithelial tissue. Epithelial tissue lines external and internal body surfaces, including skin, glands, digestive, urinary and reproductive organs. Approximately 90% of all malignant neoplasm are carcinomas.

2. Sarcoma :
Sarcomas are less common than carcinomas. They are derived from supportive and connective tissue, such as bone, fat, muscle, cartilage, and bone marrow, also from cells of the lymph system. For example : benign tumor of the bone is osteoma whereas a malignant tumor is osteosarcoma.

3. Mixed Tissue Tumors:
These tumors are derived from tissue that is capable of differentiating into both epithelial and connective tissue. These uncommon tumors are thus composed of several different types of cells. Examples of mixed tumors can be found in kidney, ovaries and testes.

Transformation of a normal cell to a cancerous one is only partially understood at present times.

DNA (genetic material) controls the production of new cells and the cells ability to grow. When a cell divides, the DNA material copies itself so that exactly the same DNA is passed to two new cells that are formed. This process is called mitosis.
When a cell becomes malignant the process of mitosis is disturbed. They also become anaplastic- i.e. their DNA stops allowing the cells to carry on normal function and instead makes a new signals that lead to new movement of cells, invasion of adjacent tissue, and metastasis. All these changes occur as a result of changes in DNA. The changes in DNA that result in malignancy occur due to various factors.

All types of Cancers are not the same. One third type is curable depending on the Grade and Stage of cancer.

Grade is its degree of maturity or differentiation under the microscope.
Stage is its extent of spread within the body. The staging system is known as TNM system.
T refers to the size and degree of local extension of the tumor.
N refers to the number of regionabl lymph nodes that have been invaded by the tumor.
M refers to the presence or absence of metastases of the tumor cells.
One third type is preventable. The two factors of cancer that cannot be brought under control are " Age" and family history, i.e. hereditary.

Environmental agents: Certain viruses can cause changes in DNA and thus produce cancer. These environmental agents are called carcinogens.

Chemical Carcinogens: these are found in a variety of products and drugs including hydrocarbons (in cigarette , cigar, pipe smoke and automobile exhaust, insecticides, pesticides, dyes, industrial chemicals, insulation and hormones, etc.

Radiation: whatever its source , sunlight, x-rays, radioactive substances, nuclear fission - is also an established carcinogen. Ionizing radiation is energy given off by radioactive substances e.g. x-rays. The radiation causes small particles called ions to be released in the cell. These particles may damage DNA. Ultra violet radiation given off by the sun can cause skin cancer, especially in persons with fair skin.
Heredity: Some types of cancer are transmitted from parents to offspring through defects in the DNA of the egg and the sperm cells. Examples of the known inherited cancers are retinoblastoma (rumor of the retina of the eye)m xeroderma pigmentosa (tumor of the skin exposed to sunlight).

1. Smoking is very often the main cause of cancer. It kills us silently and drains money from us quietly. You will be surprised to know that there are about 4000 harmful chemicals in diluted form in one stick of cigarette. Taking just one puff is 600 times worst than inhaling the exhaust fumes from vehicles.

2. Some type of food also cause cancer. These are :
a) Barbecued Food (Grilled food)
b) Deep Fried Food
c) Overheating Meat
d) Food that is high in fat causes our bile to secrete acid that contains a chemical
which is a promoter of cancer cells.
e) Food that contains preservatives, too much salt or nitrates ( for example . canned
food, salted egg and veggies, sausages etc.)\
f) Overnight Rice ( where flatoxin is accumulated)
g) Food that is low in fibre : our body needs 25 gm of both soluble and insoluble
fibre daily. So we must dring at least 1.5 litres of plain water a day.
h) Contaminated food ( for example. Moulded bread causes our body to secrete toxins
that may eventually lead to live cancer in the long run, never eat bread that is
kept in room temperature for more than 2 days especially in a humid weather.

Types of fat :
Highly Recommended for health :
a) Olive Oil - The best of all oils.
b) Fish Oil - Omega 3 ( contained in NI's Circulytes) haspoly-unsaturated fat. It is
good for our brain cells.
c) Peanut Oil: It contains Vitamin -E. A small dosage is recommended only.

Fats not recommended for health:
a) Vegetable Fat: Palm oil is the worst than coconut oil. It is high in cholesterol and
highly unsaturated.
b) Coconut oil - it has saturated fat.

Specific food and beverages:
1. Egg when eaten too much can cause " high colon cancer". Risk ovary cancer, prostate
2. Cabbage is highly recommended for health reason.
3. Tomato is best eaten raw with a bit of olive oil for better absorption. Other
alternative is to take tomato sauce.
4. Coffee is good because it contains two anti-oxidants. Inhaling the coffee aroma for
half each day is equivalent to eating two oranges a day. However, the residue of over-
burned coffee is extremely bad for health. It can cause cancer.
5. Tea, as long as it is in it original tea leaves and not processed into BOH or Lipton
packets, it is good for health. Tea contains 30 anti-oxidants. Recommended dosage is
4 cups a day.
To keep you fit the most important thing to remember is Exercise :

To maintain a balanced lifestyle, regular exercise is necessary.
Frequency: At least 3 to 5 times a week.
Intensity : Exercise till you sweat and breath deeply.,
Types of exercise : Always find one that suits your age and lifestyle.

Need for regular check- up:
Once we attain the age of 45 and above, it is recommended that we go for regular comprehensive health examination. Always please remember Early detection may save lives.
