Fats are essential for a healthy body

Fats have an important part to play in maintaining a healthy body and contrary to common belief should be a part of everyone's diet.

         

Fats have their importance and their role in a balanced and nutritional diet cannot be overlooked. Many people believe that fats are harmful and so they almost completely remove fats from their diet. But contrary to common belief fats have an important part to play in constituting a complete and healthy diet. Fats also provide essential nutrients to the body and help in healthy functioning of the body.


Many fats mostly the ones of animal origin (meats. milk, egg etc.) are excellent sources of fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A, D E and K. Even other vitamins need little amount of fat to get absorbed.

Other sources of vitamins essentially from vegetable origin provide vital fatty acids which are utilized by the body to manufacture n important group of hormones called the prostaglandins. These fatty acids have to come from the food we eat as the body cannot make them itself.

Recent researches show that omega-3 fatty acids(fatty fish like mackerels and salmon are rich sources) play a vital role in lowering the harmful effects of cholesterol.

Fats are also important sources of energy as they provide 9 calories per gm compared to protein and carbohydrates which provide only 4 calories per gm each. Fats are like stored reserves of the human body which are utilized by the body in times of starvation etc. The body has already exhausted all the available calories from proteins and carbohydrates and in time of crisis it falls back on stored reserves of fat and reduces the metabolism to reduce the energy expenditure of the body.

It is true that consumption of too much fats is harmful for the human body. It increases the risk of obesity and also the risk of various heart ailments. Fats should be included in our diet but in limited quantity. Fats should provide a maximum of 80% of calorie requirement of the body. If you need to keep your weight down reduce your fat intake but never completely stop it. But remember that fats should be an important and essential part of everyone's diet as they are necessary for a healthy body.
