Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, (hepato =liver, itis =inflammation) that is mostly caused by a viral infection. There are five main types of hepatitis, referred to as A, B, C, D and E. caused by five separate virus strains. However, the most dangerous one affecting many people in India is the Hepatitis B and C caused by the Hepatitis B (HBV) and the Hepatitis C (HCV) virus strains respectively.

Causes

Hepatitis is mostly caused by a virus, though a bacterial infection or an internal injury may also lead to the disease. Hepatitis A and E, which are less common, are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water while Hepatitis B, C and D occur as a result of contact with infected body fluids (e.g. from infected blood transfusions or infected syringes) or via the HIV virus. Some of the risk factors for the deadly Hepatitis B and C include:
-Usage of intravenous drugs
-Tattooing with unsterile equipment
-Received unscreened blood or organs
-Having a biological relationship or sex with a Hepatitis C patient
HCV, however, cannot spread through casual contact with the infected person, like hugging, coughing or kissing. It is only by sharing their items like razors or combs.

Symptoms

Hepatitis may remain asymptomatic for many days. The common symptoms of hepatitis include:
. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
. Extreme exhaustion
. Nausea and vomiting
. Any abnormal swelling of legs or hands
. Stomach or abdominal pain
. Dark-coloured urination
The Hepatitis B virus may also later cause complications like liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Tests, Prevention and treatment

The major tests for detecting hepatitis comprise of-
Blood tests: For checking the strain of the virus, including the HCV RNA (if caused by Hepatitis C) and the electrolyte levels in the body.

ELISA: for detecting the presence of antibodies in the blood against the specific virus

Liver Biopsy: for detecting damage to the liver.

Vaccination is available for Hepatitis A and B. There is no vaccine for Hepatis C; therefore, the only preventive measures are:
*Restricting physical exercises
*Drinking lots of fluids
*Avoiding the use of alcohol and medications, like Tylenol, which can harm the liver.

Treatment for Hepatitis is expensive. The mode of treatment consists of antiviral medications or surgery. In early stages, drugs and medications may help the patient get back to normal. Sometimes frequent injections, as for Hepatitis C, becomes necessary as part of the treatment. In advanced stages of the disease, however, a transplantation of the liver is inevitable.

On reading this article, i remember the sad demise of my uncle 9 years ago because of Hepatitis C. He did not have any symptoms and had sudden giddiness one day. He passed away within one week from that.I think at that time, these vaccinations were not available.
