Identify Stress Indicators

Stress is a silent killer and therefore identifying it in earlier stages can help one to curb its ill effects. Learn more to locate your stress indicators.

         

Everyone needs little amount of stress and anxiety to give their best. However, in larger doses, stress is harmful emotionally, mentally and physically.

There are many different stress indicators for various people, which can be recognized with ease. The types of stress indicators could be:

1. Emotional / Mental:


a) Withdrawal from friends and family;
b) Feeling lonely even in the middle of crowd;
c) Feeling the urge to do something but do not know what to do! etc

2. Physical:


a) Cold palms;
b) Sweaty palms and feet for those who do not get sweaty in these areas;
c) Tension built up in the shoulders and calves;
d) Headache or sudden neck ache;
e) Eyes blankly staring at a distant object without purpose;
f) Sense to eat a lot;
g) Urge to break something;
h) Getting irritated for those issues for which one would be cool otherwise;
i) Unnecessary itching in arms and legs with excessive irritation; etc

Once these symptoms are identified, remedial measures to de-stress should be taken, such as
a) Deep and slow breathing;
b) Taking a stroll;
c) Getting fresh air;
d) Taking a break;
e) Hydration using water or citric juices; etc.

Stress in the Workplace

Psychologists renamed the concept of overwork into the term overload and further breakdown into two types; Quantitative Overload is condition of having too much work to do in the time available. And Qualitative Overload which involves not so much work to do but work that is too difficult. An overload worker can develop stress conditions and worst burn-out. In reversed a work under-load was just as stressful as work overload.

Job stress is a chronic disease caused by conditions in the workplace that negatively affect an individual's performance and or overall well-being of his body and mind. One or more of a host of physical and mental illnesses manifests job stress. In some cases, job stress can be disabling. In chronic cases a psychiatric consultation is usually required to validate the reason and degree of work related stress.

A worker, when under a stress condition could lead to a dramatic physiological change takes place inside his or her body. High level of adrenalin is released from the adrenal glands leading to increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Extra sugar is released to the blood stream which leads to further physical illness. A prolonged stress may lead to psychosomatic disorders and physiological damage.

It is therefore important to recognize any work related stress which mainly manifested in any given situation such as; the costly effects reflected in a lower productive efficiency, reduced employees motivation drive, absenteeism, turnover, tardiness and physical ability to perform. In order to determine a job stressed worker, the Supervisor should know its symptoms. Common symptoms of a stress worker includes insomnia, loss of mental concentration, anxiety, absenteeism, depression, substance abuse, extreme anger and frustration, conflict in the family and lastly, physical illnesses such as heart disease, migraine, headaches, stomach problems, and back problems.

For worker who suffers from a stress conditions, this tip will help you survive the problem and live longer with a happy life. For long term effect, one must be continually prepared for changes occurred in your company. Spend more quality time for yourself and with your family. Avoid giving into vices while under constant stress. Develop positive attitudes towards stressful situations in life. In case of chronic stress consult a health professional. Reduce workplace stress by celebrating yours or your colleagues' accomplishments. Improve your line of communication, efficiency and learn from other's experiences. Don't be complacent. Be prepared for any change physically, emotionally and financially.

Nice and interesting articles both Raj and Joel. Headaches, exhaustion, fatigue all can also cause stress. These days, with peer pressure in schools, colleges, work and home all combine to cause lot of stress among the individuals. This is the reason why yoga, meditation and laughter therapies are becoming more and more popular. Exercise and swimming can also help you to relieve your body of some stress and helps in sleeping better. At times, stress and tension can also cause insomnia.
