Childbirth is a beautiful aspect of a woman's life. The fact that a new life grows within a woman and comes out in flesh and blood is an amazing thing. However, along with the process of childbirth, there comes postpartum depression. If you are a new parent, you may want to know about the reason, symptoms and cure of postpartum depression.

Even during pregnancy, women do suffer from depression. This is due to the changes happening in their body. Hormonal changes, growing belly and other marital issues might cause such depression during pregnancy. Postpartum depression happens after the childbirth. Again, there are hormonal changes, weight gain issues and more.

Reasons for Postpartum Depression

So, what could be the cause for postpartum depression? Actually, there is no single or sure cause. New mothers and new parents often find it stressful while caring for the newborn. They need to maintain a prompt feeding schedule, handle diaper changes, and calm the fussy newborn and more. Amidst all this, there is little time for communication and intimacy between the couple. This can be a cause of stress and postpartum depression.

Another common reason for postpartum depression in women is the weight gain after pregnancy. Some women tend to lose weight faster than others do. Unhealthy diet during pregnancy can increase the unwanted body fat. It can take a lot of time to get rid of such stubborn body fat. Moreover, new mothers need to be in confinement for few weeks after childbirth. This can also cause postpartum depression.

Other reasons for postpartum depression might include marital conflict, being a single parent, lack of family support during and after pregnancy, hormonal changes in the body, lack of nutritious diet and stress.

Symptoms of Postpartum Depression

After knowing the reasons or causes of postpartum depression, we can list out the symptoms of postpartum depression. Again, there are several symptoms of postpartum depression. You might feel agitated, have mood swings, feel exhausted and wasted, insomnia, and so on.

The fluctuating estrogen and progesterone hormones and exhaustion after childbirth can cause postpartum depression. You may want more attention, care and affection from spouse and family members. Among other symptoms, medical experts believe that women during postpartum depression also tend to feel suicidal.

Postpartum Depression and Treatment

Now, you may want to know the details of treating postpartum depression. Low self-esteem and feeling neglected is a common aspect of postpartum depression. Family members need to provide active support to the new mother. Proper nutrition and mood enhancing fruits and vegetables can do wonders.

Taking fish oil or fish oil supplements during postpartum depression can be a good idea. However, if new mothers are breastfeeding their baby, they can try using flax instead of fish oil. Some newborn babies do not like the taste of fish oil in their mother's milk.

You can also try psychotherapy, hypnotherapy or antidepressants for higher postpartum depression. It is advisable to avoid medication if you are nursing the newborn. In such cases, try eating a healthy diet and watch your portions. Eat smaller quantity of food at frequent intervals. Reduce the intake of carbohydrates and unhealthy snacks. Instead, focus on consuming more fruits, vegetables and meals with higher protein and good fat.

All these tips can help you cope with postpartum depression. Mild exercise, walking and positive thinking can be of immense help in controlling postpartum depression. Do consult your physician before making any changes in your diet and daily routine. You can also find additional help online on various websites.

Excellent article ! It may or may not happen with all pregnancies and births.I have 3 children and looking back I never went through this particular phase in any one of them.I am glad because I have seen some women go through a bad phase where they even try to harm their children especially if the child is a female and they already have a daughter .It is as you say to a certain extent psychological and riven by circumstances ...

Thank you Ushakiran for your kind comments. Glad to know that it is a helpful article. Personally, no experience of kids yet, but have seen friends and family go through the experience. Not that they had postpartum depression but some do feel left out and a gap in their relation with spouse. That can be a sad part and cause further tensions. I feel daughter or son are the same..in fact daughters seem more cute :)
