Aside from accidents, there are also diseases that affect the bones. Damage caused by diseases to the bones maybe temporary or permanent. What are these diseases and how can we prevent them?

Rickets is a bone injury caused by deficiency of vitamin D. When babies do not get enough vitamin D in their diet and at the same time do not get enough sunlight, their bones become deformed. Children with rickets are usually bow-legged, with curved backbones and flat heads. Their wrists and ankles are enlarged. Generally, they can have weak muscles. A child with rickets should be given plenty of milk. This will provide the calcium to make the bones hard. Vitamin D supplements should be given but not in excessive amounts. Treatment continues until X-rays show that the bones have healed. Exposure to morning sunshine will also help cure rickets. But do not over-exposed your skin to sunlight because it may cause also different kinds of skin diseases such as sunburn and skin cancer.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones common to women as they grow older. Their bones become thinner and brittle so they are easily fractured. Lost bone tissue cannot be replaced easily. However, bone loss can be prevented by proper diet. There should be adequate calcium in the diet which can be obtained from milk, green leafly vegetables, citrus fruits and shellfish. Calcium tablets may also be needed.

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the backbone. It may start in early childhood or adolescence. It maybe caused by a disease that affected the spine or it may be a defect that is already present at birth. Treatment of scoliosis includes the use of braces or hooks. Bed rest is also important.

Arthritis is a disease of the joints and affects mostly elderly people. This is caused by the destruction of the cartilage between bones and a joint especially the hip or knee. It can also affect fingers on both hands and feet.

Bone Infections

An injury to the bone such as an open fracture can cause infection. When a bone becomes infected, the pus can slowly destroy the bones. The doctor may advise antibiotics for treating bone infections. Further infection can be avoided by practicing hygienic measures such as washing hands often, and washing and covering the wound.

Early detection of these bone diseases is very important and there is a high probability that these can be treated. Also, the best prevention is to eat the proper diet and maintain cleanliness to your body.
