Vegetarian diet can help control Diabetes

A vegetarian diet can be beneficial for diabetes.

         

It is not easy for a diabetes patient especially taking care of his food habits and diet. It is absolutely vital that if you are diabetic you monitor your food and diet patterns. Your food should not have contents which have adverse effects on your blood sugar levels. Vegetarian diet is always considered beneficial for diabetes patient. Vegetarian diet is generally high on fiber content which can be helpful in keeping blood sugar levels under check as it excludes meats which have lot of fats and carbohydrates which enhance blood sugar level.

A vegetarian diet generally comprises of food items like whole grains, fruits and vegetables which are excellent for diabetes as they help adjust your high and and low blood sugar levels. By opting for a vegetarian diet you may not be able to cure diabetes but you will be successful in controlling it. At the same time you will be able to maintain your body weight which will make your body more receptive to insulin. Some other benefits of a vegetarian diet are that you will also be able to control your cholesterol, which can help reduce risks of heart disease, bone and joint problems, kidney disease and other related diabetes related health conditions.


As already discussed vegetarian diet is high on fiber content and if you are suffering from Type 1 diabetes you can actually reduce your daily dosage of insulin. At the same time a fiber rich vegetarian diet has been proven to be beneficial for people suffering with Type 2 diabetes and helps them reduce their need on medications.

If you have diabetes it is highly recommended that you take at least 9 servings of vegetables and fruits and up to 6 servings of whole grains a day in order to derive the total benefits of a vegetarian diet.

It is important to note here that before you actually switch to a vegetarian diet you should take proper advice from a doctor or a dietitian who can help you determine the daily calorie needs of your body which can be beneficial in maintaining a healthy weight and blood sugar levels.
