Onion Sambar Recipe

Sambar is the popular south indian recipe. It is mixed with the rice and is used as the main item for lunch or meals. It is possible to make sambar with different vegetables. Onion sambar is the popular among them. Usually small onion is preferred to make sambar than big onion.

         



Sambar is the popular south indian recipe. It is mixed with the rice and is used as the main item for lunch or meals. It is possible to make sambar with different vegetables. Onion sambar is the popular among them. Usually small onion is preferred to make sambar than big onion. Onion sambar or any sambar can also be used as a side dish for idly, dosa, pongal, upma etc.This type of sambar is more popular in Tamilnadu.

Small onion is also rich in folic acid. Fenugreek seeds cools our body temperature.

Ingredients:
Toor dhal - 1 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Tamarind - Size of lemon
Sambar powder - 6 tsp
Small onion - 10 to 15
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
Bengal gram - 2 tsp
Coriander seeds - 2 tsp
Red chillies - 1 to 2
Grated coconut - 3 tsp
Asafoetida powder - little
Salt - As per taste
Curry leaves - few
Oil - 3 tsp

Method:
1. Add water and turmeric powder to toor dhal and cook it in pressure cooker.
2. Peel the skin of the small onion.
3. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and add bengal gram to it.
4. When bengal gram becomes slightly reddish, add coriander seeds and red chillies to it.
5. Allow the above fried items to cool for sometime and grind these along with cocunut to a fine paste.
6. Extract the tamarind juice for 1 cup and add 1 cup of water to it.
7. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
8. Add fenugreek seeds when mustard seeds starts sputtering out.
9. Add small onions and fry for sometime.
10. Add tamarind juice, sambar powder, asafoetida powder and salt and mix it well.
11. Boil this till the onions are cooked and the smell of tamarind goes.
12. Smash the cooked dhal using a spoon and add to the boiling sambar.
13. After sometimes, add the grinded paste.
14. Take out the sambar from the flame when yellow foam appears on the corners.
15. Garnish with curry leaves and serve it with rice or idli.

Note:
1. It is not mandatory to use coconut for this sambar. If you don't wish to add coconut
you can skip the steps 3 to 5.

Oh i knew Sambar but didn't knew much about Onion Sambar . I will love to taste how Onion Sambar tastes .

Sambar is very famous in Tamil Nadu. I think this recipe is a good one.
