Oil Spills are a major problem nowadays. It is marine pollutant in fact. Recently we had heard about the oil spill in Gulf of Mexico and had witnessed the photos of birds struggling for life that had socked in oils. Also President Obama and his Mexican counter part visited the Mexican coastal recently to have a first hand experience of the disaster.
There are various reasons for oil spill. The important among them is leakage from oil well which is supposed to be happened in Gulf of Mexico. Leakage usually occurs while drilling oil wells.
Oil spill can also occur from faults in the cap rock. Another reason for oil spill is the washing of tankers in sea. Petroleum extracted from continental shelf area is transported from one place to another through sea itself. After unloading the petroleum the tankers are washed in the sea. Hence oil spill occur near ports.
Another source of oil spill is oil tankers. Because of mistakes as well as accidents during transportation oil may spread to thousands of kilometers. Such oil spill due to accidents have occurred one or two years back.
Oil spill not only pollute the sea but also the land. Oil floats on water and this layer damages marine animals life and also the coastal environment. If the feathers are socked in this oil spill the buoyancy reduces. Hence flight will be prevented. The odour of oil also may hinder the migrating birds path. The level of oxygen in sea will lower in oil spilt area endangering all the living organisms there.
It is not easy to recover from oil spills. It may take upto 10 years to escape from an oil spill disaster. The present Mexican oil spill may not be able to cure within the limited days as all expects. Since "Prevention is better than cure " the way to keep marines unpolluted is to care oil spill in future.
