October 09, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 20   Category: Health    Views: 554

In the globalized modern life, our kids have become the part of a convenience culture. Their taste buds decide what they eat and this picky eating affects their health. Eating disorders have weakened health generally, especially bone health of growing children.

Today is the age of fast foods. Eating fast food is the fashion of the day. Kids and teenagers of our modern times opt for a greasy burger and a bag of fries, with a soda or a cola to complete their meal. Eating disorders of modern lifestyle are becoming life-threatening; but even before that, they can weaken bones drastically.

Eating disorders on the increase

In the recent decades eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa are on the increase, devastating behavioral problems, including emotional and personality disorders. The incidence of these disorders is increasing over the last two decades.

Anorexia nervosa

Sometime back Anorexia nervosa was reported to be prevalent only in middle and upper socio economic groups. But today it is occurring at lower socio economic groups also. There is an increase of this incidence of eating disorder among primary relatives of those who have anorexia nervosa and bulimia as a family disease. This suggests that it is spreading on a familial basis.

Bone deficiency

Eating disorders lead to deficiencies in bone mineral density. It is reported that almost 90% of women with anorexia nervosa experience osteopenia, a disease cause by loss of bone minerals, and about 40% of women have osteoporosis, advanced stage of loss of bone density. Growing children who have this complaint fail to develop strong bones during their critical growing period.

Eating disorders lead to further complications

The longer the eating disorder persists the more likely it leads permanent bone loss. As a result, further complications occur due to bone deficiency. This may include failure to achieve peak bone mass, increased risk of bone fractures and inability to reach potential height.

Eating disorders affect women's fertility

Chronic anorexia nervosa affects women in so many ways. It lowers the levels calcium and estrogen secretion. It elevates the level of cortisol. Women are more affected by the eating disorders.

In short, eating disorders weakens not only the bones of individuals but also health of the whole society. It cripple the future generations also.

Most of the eating disorders other than the poverty related ones are all modern day ills...One can see that as the per capita income increases individuals become more and more lax about simple things in life like balanced home cooked meals...
