October 15, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 30   Category: Health    Views: 486

Drug therapy makes the parents much worried. It is something to be handled seriously and carefully. Self-medication of many parents is dangerous to the health of children. You have to note certain points when you take your child to the doctor.

Prescribing drugs for children is not as easy as it is done for the adults. Most of the parents tend to administer drugs to their children without consulting the physician. They administer the drugs, reducing the drug quantity that is given to the adults. It is very dangerous since the efficacy of a particular drug may be different for a child and its side effects can be more serious. There are also certain drugs which are strictly contradicted below a certain age.

Hence it is advisable to consult the physician for any medication. When you go to the doctor just remember these hints which can guide you for an easy and useful visit.

15 Important tips to have in mind when you take your child to a doctor

1) When your kid is sick do not hesitate and waste time in taking the child to a doctor. A family doctor can be more helpful in treating your child.

2) Never forget to take the previous prescription and medication records if you have any. That will help the physician to give a proper diagnose. If it is just a casual visit it may not yield effective results.

3) Whenever you approach a doctor for medication you should have the list of drugs to which your child is allergic. The doctor usually will have it in his/her file. If not inform the doctor about it every time.

4) You should be able to explain the doctor systematically about the onset and course of the disease. That can help him/her to get a clear idea about the illness.

5) You should give specific details about the illness, about fever, nature of cough, stools, etc.

6) Inform him about the medication you have given or given by any other doctor as a first aid treatment. The reactions if any should also be explained.

7) The doctor should also be explained of relevant family situation or history about that disease can help him.

Give proper details and answer doctor's questions specifically. If you are not aware of details which doctor needs, just tell him you are not sure and state only the facts.

9) Be clear about the diagnosis or directions given by the doctor. If you are not clear, ask him to explain you things. It is the question of your kid's life and not your prestige.

10) You should be clear about administering the drugs- about the dosage, frequency, course and mode of administration for each drug prescribed. Confirm what to be done if you do not get a particular drug that he has prescribed. In that case he can recommend a substitute.

11) You may ask about the possible side effects a particular drug may cause. He will guide you what to do if anything happens.

12) Ask about the infective condition of the illness and if the child can attend school. He may also tell you what instructions to follow while attending school.

13) Always check the name of the drug, expiry date and the directions for using it. You should have a clear idea of administering it- orally, externally, etc.

14) Ask for the follow up date if the doctor has not mentioned it in the prescription.

15) Ask him also what to be done in case of some emergency that may cause afterwards and how and where he can be contacted.
