Types of Human Digestive Glands

Digestive glands play very important role in our body. In this article we are going to discuss about the human digestive glands.


There are five types of digestive glands in humans. They are as follow-

1. Salivary glands.

2. Gastric glands.

3. Liver.

4. Pancreas.

5. Intestinal glands.

1. Salivary glands - secrete viscous fluid called saliva. Salivary glands of three types are found in humans. They are as follow-

a) Parotid glands.

b) Sublingual glands.

c) Submaxillary glands.

a) Parotid glands - are largest salivary glands and are located on the sides of the face, just below and in front of the ears.

b) Sublingual glands - lie under the front part of the tongue.

c) Submaxillary glands - located at the angles of the lower jaw.

2. Gastric glands
- found in the wall of stomach. They are of three types-

a) Peptic cells.

b) Oxyntic cells.

c) Mucous cells.

3. Liver - is the largest gland in the body. It is located in the upper right side of the abdominal cavity.

4. Pancreas
- lies partly behind the stomach in the abdomen.

5. Intestinal glands
- lie in the wall of small intestine. They are two types-

a) Crypts of Lieberkuhn.

b) Brunner's glands.

About two to three liters of intestinal juice is secreted each day.
