Alarming sirens are blowing louder in the eastern world since breast cancer is increasing rapidly in India and other developing countries. Modern changes have brought in such threats to human health.

October is the breast cancer awareness month. Pink colored ribbons, banners, clothes, wrappers, etc., used in this month, are announcing the increasing dangers of breast cancer. Through so many of such awareness programs and projects, breast cancer cases are said to have been reduced in the US and the western world. But it is an alarming fact that it is all the more on the increase in the eastern world, especially in India and developing countries. There are many reasons for its increase in India.

Reasons for breast cancer increase in India

1) Globalization
Globalization has caused many changes in human lifestyle all over the world. Media plays a vital part in this change. Spread of knowledge through fast communication has inserted many changes in age-old practices. Indian health statistics about breast cancer say that urban women are more affected than the rural. Experts state that breast cancer in Indian metro cities will double in 2015.

2) Change in lifestyle
Life today is quite different from what it had been three or four decades back. Today more women in India are going out for various jobs. They have to various risk factors leading them to health hazards, including breast cancer.

3) Pregnancy and childbirth
Modern Indian women prefer to have their first child late, due to their life circumstances. Earlier girls married soon after puberty and had children. They did not postpone their first child birth or adopt any birth control plan. Late age at first childbirth and shorter duration of breast-feeding have much to do in breast cancer. Breast feeding controls breast cancer in a certain way. But women attending outside jobs cannot do this.

4) Birth control pills
Taking birth control pills to postpone child birth or to avoid pregnancy affect female health. In addition to the above reasons, early age at puberty and changes of menopause also add to the risk of breast cancer. Modern girls are said to attain puberty earlier than girls of earlier decades. This is due to the changes in food habits and emotional behaviors that occur through mass media.

5) Expensive medical facilities
Earlier mammography can help women find out the symptoms of breast cancer. In the west it is very popular and is common to have this test earlier to treat in the beginning. Whereas in India, it is still beyond the reach.

6) Ignorance of women
In spite of various plans of government, most of the Indian women are still illiterate and ignorant. It needs to have more awareness to motivate these ignorant women. Women are not trained even to examine their own breasts, if they cannot afford to go for mammography.

7) Superstitions are stronger in India
Superstitions and taboos have stronger influence and women shun even from knowing about breast cancer. They connect this disease with something forbidden. Many women hesitate to undergo any examination often out of fear of finding cancer.

8) Health awareness and sanitary conditions
Health hazards such as diabetes, obesity and blood sugar are increasing among the Indian women. Sanitary conditions are going from bad to worse. Food habits are also changing due to various influences. These also affect the Indian women leading to breast cancer.

Unless awareness is given to Indian women regarding breast cancer and activities to arrest this increasing growth are done, it will be a great danger to the whole country and to the generations to come.
