Why Does Modern World Misunderstand Muslims?

October 20, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 15   Category: Social    Views: 781

There is no wonder in saying the three major religions of today have the same father of history. Christianity, Islam and Judaism have Abraham as their forefather.Their scriptures have most of the stories in common.

Islam has become the most misunderstood religion of this century, especially after the events of September 11th 2001 in the USA. Muslims have become a subject of major concern to the world media, religious groups and people of the other religions. Sporadic incidents that occur here and there are misinterpreted by the media, giving a distorted picture of what Islam is about, and what The Quran actually says.

Although there are many misconceptions about the dogmas of Islam and teachings of the Holy Quran a few of them have vital importance today.

1) Misconception that Islam promotes terrorism and war

Islam is actually a region of peace. The very word Islam means peace and purity. The root of the word Islam comes from the Arabic word salama which means peace, purity, submission and obedience. In the religious sense also, Islam means a religion of peaceful life through total surrender to the will of God and faithful obedience to His Law given in the Holy Quran.

2) Misconception about Jihad

Many believe that Jihad is used for merciless killing of people of other faiths and promoting terrorism. It is only a misconception that the Muslims and the Quran promote killing, war and terrorism, especially for reasons of differing faith or in order to establish a Muslim kingdom. The Quran never encourages the idea of fighting and killing people of other faiths. But actually, it warns about accusing other people of being misguided in order to seek worldly gains.

"O you who believe, if you go forth in the cause of God, you shall investigate carefully. And do not say to those who greet you with peace: "You are not a believer!" You are seeking the vanity of this world; but with God are many riches. That is how you were before, but God favored you, so investigate carefully. God is expert over what you do." (The Quran 4:94)

3) Misconception about Allah and Prophet Muhammad

Most people in the west know virtually only very little about Islam. Most of them have the notion that Prophet Muhammad is Allah. But actually Prophet Muhammad, as stated by him, is only the messenger of God Who dictated him the Holy Quran. Allah is the only true God, a pure reflection of the unique concept that Islam associates with God. Islam teaches that Allah is the only Creator and Sustainer of the universe, Who is similar to nothing, and nothing is comparable to Him. The Holy Quran is the supreme authority of Islam and it says, "In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Say (O Muhammad), He is God, the One God, the Everlasting Refuge, who has not begotten, nor has been begotten, and equal to Him is not anyone." (Quran chapter 112)

4) Misconception that Islam is against Jesus

Misconception about Jesus is found everywhere that Muslims do not believe in Jesus or think negatively of Jesus. But the truth is the otherwise. Jesus is considered as an important prophet and a messenger of God, like Abraham and Moses. Islam believes that the message of Jesus was a continuation of the message of monotheism and doing good, like prophets before him. Jesus is the one who is one of the most mentioned prophets in The Quran.

Basically all religions have the same function and teach more or less the same thing.Religion is afterall a man made institution that had a specific purpose towards the society, that of disciplining and making life peaceful. But s of now, every single religion has become a tool in the hands of a few religious leaders who spread everything else but it was meant to do...Islam is no different and it is possibly the worst manipulated religion in the recent times, earning it the dubious distinction of being the most violent of all ...
