Legends say that when gods of heaven were cursed by Durvasa and had to fight with the Asuras (underworld demons) it was Lord Vishnu who came in the form of Dhanwanthari and cured the ailments of gods by providing them Amritha from his vessel. Ancient Puranas say that Lord Vishnu took the form of Dhanwanthari and emerged from the "Ocean of Milk" when it was churned.
