Ten Tips to Counteract the Invading Bedbugs

October 22, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 25   Category: Health    Views: 725

Armies of bedbugs have begun to attack the world. Recent newspaper reports about this spreading menace have made people, especially New Yorkers in the United States, anxious and restless. Can humanity eradicate this spreading menace?

Bedbug attack is a great menace. I have experienced it when I was residing in factory quarters with my parents. Elders in our area used to say that bedbug attack is an ill omen. It may be a superstitious talk. But it is an undeniable fact that it spoils our sleep and makes us restless and awkward. Skin areas such as back, legs, and arms are common places that bed bugs attack. When you scratch the bed bug bite areas, they may develop skin infections and may leave behinds scars

Reports have alarmed people with the invasion news of bedbugs in famous department stores and apartment buildings in New York City, including the Empire State building. Sightings of these rust-colored apple-seed like insects have surged in New York and around the US. Millions of dollars are being spent and still it has become a difficult task to redeem people out of this bedbug stigma!

Three invasion routes of bedbugs

1) Global travels have made bedbug invasion easier. Bedbugs, generally, begin their invasions through travelers. They climb into the luggage of travelers and are transported to new environments and they settle in safe places, waiting for the night to begin their attack.

2) Another route of their march is the furniture at garage sale or thrift shop. They march into a living space through the moving boxes, mattresses, pillows, and other belongings of shifting people.

3) It is easier for the bedbugs to find an easy path through furniture in multi-unit dwellings, such as condominiums and apartment buildings. They can find their way throughout the premises by moving about the walls, cracks, pipes, and wires.

Ten Tips to check their advance

1) Thorough check up

If you suspect bedbug movement in your house, the first thing to do is a thorough check up for bed bugs. Search every nook and corner of your house, including mattresses, carpets, books, old clocks, wall sconces, electrical switch plates, wall posters, books, magazines, and so on and spray a suitable insecticide.

2) Maintain hygiene

Needless to say that it is important to control bed bugs at the very source, since they are known to hide in the smallest areas like the tufts of mattresses and even within floor molding. Focusing on the level of hygiene maintained in the home is the best way to get rid of bed bugs.

3) Dry heat your damp clothes

Dirty and damp places and clothes are the most ideal places to harbor bed bugs. Wash all your linen in extremely hot water, especially when you suspect bedbug contamination. Clean all your personal items. Also vacuum your mattress, baseboards, carpet edges, switch plates, floor cracks and all the furniture.

4) An effective home made insecticide

It is necessary to spray a strong insecticide to eradicate these bedbugs. A successful home made insecticide is a concoction comprising of water, salt, vinegar and neem. This concoction is one of the best home remedies that I have used successfully for bed bugs without any side effect.

5) Fortress around your bed

This was the common protection that we used to have. We sprinkled insecticide powder all around the bed so that bedbugs cannot creep into. We vacuumed the mattresses and floors and kept the mattresses in sealed covers.

6) Dispose the vacuum waste in sealed covers

This is very important since the bedbugs have a long life if they are not killed. They may come out of the waste bags and creep into furniture again. Hence disposal of the vacuum bag is recommended in a sealed plastic bag. Dust proof covers can be used.

7) Hot water treatments of furniture

This method also had been successful. We used to pour boiling water on the suspected cracks and joints of furniture.

8) Steam treatment

We have seen this common in some pest control companies using steam to deal with mattresses and other pieces of upholstered furniture. At home, you may use small steam cleaners to care for mattresses and other bedding selections to get rid of bedbugs.

9) Hot temperature can eradicate bedbugs

Temperatures over 113 degrees is said to kill bed bugs. Hence wash and dry your clothing and linens at high temperatures. When you return from public places after staying in hotels, etc., your clothes and other things might have become hiding places of bedbugs. Give them a steam treatment or dry heat

10) Use anti-bug dust or insecticides

Anti-bug dusts, insecticides and liquid insecticides or Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) products are available in markets. Treat all the cracks and crevices with an anti-bug dust or insecticide. Sprinkle them well on wall voids, baseboards, switchboards, etc. Some insecticides comprised of pyrethrins and canola oil are harmless for children and pets.
