November 02, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 12   Category: Health  Earning $0.15   Views: 639

Children of modern era are growing sleepless night owls. It is certainly a great danger to future. Modern lifestyle and food habits are making them sleepless and hyperactive.

Children of modern era do not want to sleep. They want to stay up late with this and that. Present generation uses the bedroom which is primarily meant for sleep as an all-purpose room where they spend their sleeping time with other things, watching television, playing video games, browsing computer, reading horror books, or even biting crackers or crunchy snacks.

Tech toys and caffeine keep awake even our little children till late night. Huddled under bed covers, even long after lights are out, our teenage boys and girls are busily texting. Electronic devices can be seen flickering in dark rooms of your children challenging their sleep and health.
Children today have their whole life technology-oriented. It is their life breath without which they cannot exist. No wonder that they are sleepless night owls.

Recent researches show that modern children, as they hit teenage, naturally shift to late night sleep. Their lifestyle with technological gadgets and social circles keep them awake as late as possible.

Technological gadgets stealing off sleep

Kaiser Family foundation study of 2010 revealed that American children aged between 8 and 16 spend an average of 6 to 7 hours a day using some kind of electronic device. Often they will be using more than one device at a time. "Media multi tasking" has definitely made them technology over-loaded and hyperactive, affecting their "circadian rhythm".

Snacking and drinking energy drinks

Snacking habit and drinking energy drinks containing caffeine also have serious consequences on the sleeping habits of our children. According to a study published in a periodical called "Pediatrics" in 2009, Calamaro and her team reported that only 21% of the teens got at least 8 hours sleep daily. It found that more than 75% of teenagers used at least 100 mg of caffeine in some form or other. They stated that consuming caffeine and multi-tasking habit of teenagers had direct impact on their sleep.

Consequences of being night owls

Deprivation of sleep, making our children night owl, has very serious on the behavior and health of these children. That does not stop with nodding their heads during the following day betraying their loss of sleep. Researchers, in fact, say that lack of sleep affects their health seriously making the teenagers become victims of chronic diseases at an early age. They are easily affected with modern lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, etc.

The problem does not stop with the teenagers. It spreads to the still younger generations and even little children. Unless parents and others pay heed to this developing problem it will be a fatal loss to the whole human society.
