Ten Reasons that Advocate Vegetarian Diet

Food makes man alive. Man needs to eat a balanced diet to keep up his health. Today, more people are opting vegetarian diet that is devoid of meat, fish, poultry and even egg. People adopt vegetarian diet for health, economical, ethical and religious reasons.

         

Thiruvalluvar, a famous South Indian sage, wrote two thousand years ago in his literary work Thirukkural that all living beings admire and adore the one who does not eat flesh of animals or birds.

Man is the superior animal of the universe with his sixth sense and has been created to "fill the earth and subdue it, rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky." (Genesis 1:28) That does not mean that he should kill them all and fill his belly. Killing and eating them may not be the only thing that is expected from man to do with them. They can help him to find out means for his living.

The former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop pointing about eating meat said, "Studies state that 70 percent of all Americans are dying from diseases that are directly tied to their eating habits." Many studies confirm that a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and soy is your best bet for living a longer, healthier and more enjoyable life.

Ten reasons why we must avoid eating meat

1) Compassionate reason

Compassion is the special virtue of man. He is the superior creation on this earth and is expected to be compassionate with other creatures. Vegetarian diet enables him to have the virtues of compassion, humility, nobility and magnanimity and have an amicable life. Studies say that eating flesh develops in man animal-like qualities. All the religions insist the quality of compassion. The Russian philosopher Leo Tolstoy was an avowed vegetarian.

2) Physiological reason

Taitriya Upanishad, an ancient Indian scripture, says that man's food should be that which grows on the earth and humans and animals have to depend on the plant kingdom for food.

A study from Loma Linda University says that vegetarians live about seven years longer and live a healthier life. A British team that studied 6,000 vegetarians and 5,000 non-vegetarians for 12 years found that vegetarians were 40 percent less likely to die from cancer during that time and 20 percent less likely to die from other diseases. Ancient medical systems of India say that meat gets decomposed soon and is dangerous for health.

3) Non-vegan food causes diseases

Ancient medical systems say that meat is unsuitable to human digestion system and causes diseases easily. Meat foods carry bacteria and potential diseases associated with them. Modern researches say that meat eating is one of the reasons for increase in cardiovascular diseases. Statistics say that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States. Researches point out that the average American male eating a meat-based diet has a 50 percent chance of dying from heart disease and this risk drops to 15 percent if he cuts out meat.

4) Saturated fat in meat is dangerous

Non-vegan foods contain more saturated fats that cause indigestion. Animal fats putrefy easily and the essential fatty acids undergo many changes that are harmful to health. The saturated fat and cholesterol are found to be linked with heart diseases and strokes. The problem of obesity is caused mainly by meat consumption.

5) Meat eating affects your memory

American Heart Association has observed that meat consumption not only raises levels of cholesterol but also of amino acid called homocysteine, which is widely seen now as a risk marker for heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. Meat consumption affects memory in many ways.

6) Expenses are more for non-vegan diet

Expense caused by meat-eating is more in two ways- one by the price in the market that is more than vegetables and secondly by the medical treatment caused by eating non-vegan foods. Vegetarian system can save money in both ways. Geoffrey L. Rudd, secretary of the Vegetarian Society wrote in 1957 that Britain with a population of about 50 million people was spending 500 million sterling pounds on the health bill which is caused by meat-eating.

7) Vegetables supply more nutrition and better health

Indigestion and constipation cause most of the diseases today. Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming more fiber, which pushes waste out of the body and regulating digestion. Fiber content in meat is very low. Studies of Harvard and Brigham Women's Hospital show that people who ate a high-fiber diet had a 42 percent lower risk of diverticulitis. People who eat lower on the food chain also tend to have fewer incidences of constipation, hemorrhoids and spastic colon. It has been proved by many researches that vegetarian foods are conducive for longevity, strength and purity of mind and body.

8) Commercial meat has become a dangerous one today

Commercialism has corrupted consumerism. Before animals are taken to the slaughterhouse they are over-fed and artificially fattened, so that more meat could be obtained from them to bring larger profit. They are even drugged at times. What about old and sick animals being slaughtered? Sure, the meat of such animals cannot be health promoting. What about fish from polluted water? Is it not harmful?

9) Vegetarian diets are very healthy

Vegetarian diets have lower risks of diseases. Plant-based diets containing whole grains, fruits and vegetables are not only low in saturated cholesterol, but also they are high in fiber, minerals and vitamins. They maintain the integrity of brain function.

10) Vegetarian diet can save the earth from global warming

Consumption of vegetarian food can be a simple way to save the earth from global warming. Rearing livestock for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the fuel guzzling cars and trucks in the world put together! The UNFAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) estimates that direct emissions from meat production account for 18 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, one of the main reasons for global warming.

Vegetarian food is always conducive to human health. It is fitting to mention here what Einstein said about vegetarian diet, "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
