Know the Symptoms of Diabetes in Toddlers

Most of the people do not believe that toddlers can have diabetes. Due to genetic reasons and changes in modern lifestyle, diabetes in children is increasing day by day.


Until recent times there has been an impression that diabetes attacks only elderly people. In the recent decades toddler diabetes is found to increase. In fact, Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases found among children. It affects one in every 400 to 600 children and adolescents in the United States. Though change of lifestyle may be an important reason for this, genetics plays a stronger role in causing diabetes.

Raising toddlers amidst busy schedules of modern life is extremely difficult. It is still more difficult if the children are found with chronic diseases such as diabetes. Popularly known as Type 1 diabetes, this type of diabetes is prevalent all over the world among toddlers and children. What is sad about toddler diabetes is that the child is too small to recognize what is wrong with it. Nor it can communicate its problems. It is on the part of the adults to find out the symptoms of diabetes in children. Hence it is a must on the part of the adults to know about the signs and symptoms of diabetes in toddlers.
Unites States National Diabetes Fact Sheet of 2011 reports that data collected from 25.8 million children and adults in the United States shows 8.3% of the population have diabetes. It is commonly found among all races and is alarmingly growing all over the world.

When pancreas doesn't produce sufficient insulin

Insulin production plays a vital role in Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin. The fuel glucose from sugar passes into the bloodstream, where a hormone called insulin helps the body's cells use the glucose for growth and energy. But sometimes insulin in the body doesn't do this work or may not be sufficient to do this. This may be caused by genetic reasons or physical conditions.

Symptoms and signs of Type 1 diabetes

1) Serious symptoms
In serious conditions the toddlers may show signs of stomach pain, vomiting and nausea. They may find hard to breathe normally. In such cases the doctor should be consulted immediately. Diagnostic tests such as blood sugar level test may be necessary.

2) Frequent urination
Excessive peeing is one of the symptoms that warns the parents in the earliest stage that something is wrong with their child. The child may pass urine often and also in excess quantity.

3) Unreasonable weight loss
Children normally increase in weight as they eat. If you find that your child is losing weight or not increasing in weight it may be a sign of having diabetes.

4) Abnormal thirst
Normally you can understand children drinking water when they are thirsty. But if they show abnormal thirst and drink water or fluids often you have to check the reason for it. They may also develop dry mouth and throat.

5) Correlation between appetite and weight loss
The child may show symptoms of appetite and consume more food. But the weight may be decreasing. This is another sure sign of diabetes.

6) Rash on the skin not healing
The rash on the skin may be found not healing in the normal course, even if you apply all prescribed creams. This is one of the symptoms of having diabetes.
