Thanksgiving is a great virtue. In the words of Cicero, "A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues." Thanksgiving Day is observed in most of the countries in some way or other.


Thanksgiving is a noble virtue. As John Henry Jowett says, "Life without thankfulness is devoid of love and passion. Hope without thankfulness is lacking in fine perception. Faith without thankfulness lacks strength and fortitude. Every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road." Every country and culture celebrates Thanksgiving Day as a day of thanksgiving festival.

Thanksgiving Day around the world

In the US it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year. In Canada, it is observed on the second Monday of October. In the United Kingdom, Australia, and some Asian countries such as India and Malaysia this day is celebrated as Harvest Festival, thanking for the harvest they had. In China, they celebrate this as Midwinter festival during the Winter Solstice when their families gather and thank their ancestors and others. Most of the countries all over the world celebrate thanksgiving day in some form, though they may be at different dates of the year.

Thanksgiving Day in the US

In the US, Thanksgiving Day was begun to be celebrated as a Harvest Festival from the fifties of the 16th century. The harvest celebration that the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621 is said to be the origin of Thanksgiving Day in the US. George Washington, the first president of the US, proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1789 and it was made a public holiday only since 1863.

Celebrations of Thanksgiving Day around the world

Almost allover the world Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in some other name or at some other time to thank for the prosperity given by nature. It is generally a harvest related festival celebrating communal harmony. Usually, it is celebrated for many days thanking God and nature for providing everything for their prosperous life. It is an occasion of gathering together in families and paying homage to the ancestors. People spend their time in getting together for special dinners and engaging in enthusiastic entertainments. Parades, social functions or festivities also add cheers to the season. People plan weekend trips during this popular time to visit families and friends.

Symbols of Thanksgiving Day

Generally people have the produce that they get in abundance from their harvest as the symbols of their thanksgiving celebrations. Some have rituals of offering with those products and add them in special recipes in their dinners. In the US, the festival meal includes a turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables which are usually abundant during this season.

Thanksgiving Day is a very meaningful day for getting together and developing communal harmony. It fosters up human relationship and is also healthy to individuals since it gives body and mind a pleasant break in the hectic life of modern days.
