Cigarette smoking is the most important single factor in causation of lung cancer.

         

Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world. The great majority of tumors in the lung are primary bronchial carcinomas. Prognosis of primary lung carcinoma remains poor.

Symptoms of bronchial carcinoma are-

1. Hyponatraemia.

2. Hypercalcaemia.

3. Carcinoid syndrome.

4. Eosinophilia.

7. Bronchial obstruction.

8. Pneumonia.

9. Recurrent pneumonia.

10. Lung abscess.

11. Breathlessness.

12. Pleural effusion.

13. Symptoms of elevation of diaphragm.

14. Stridor.

15. Pleural pain.

16. Chest pain.

17. Weight loss.

18. Anorexia.

19. Unilateral wheeze.

20. Hoarseness of voice.


Investigations-

1. Bronchial biopsies.

2. Bronchoscopy.

3. Chest x-ray.

4. CT.

5. Ultrasound.

6. Sputum cytology.

7. Pleural biopsy.

8. Percutaneous needle biopsy under CT or ultrasound.


Treatment-

1. Surgery.

2. Radiotherapy.

3. Chemotherapy.

4. Laser therapy.

5. Stenting.

6. Diet therapy.
