Tai Chi and Yoga Drug-free Therapies of the East

Tai Chi is from China. Yoga is from India. Both of them can offer just as many physical and psychological health benefits as more vigorous exercises. They are drug free therapies of the ancient world.


You need not jump up and down like you are on a pogo stick to get your body fit. There are kinder and gentler ways of exercise to keep our body and mind fit. Yoga from India and Tai Chi from China are ancient exercises which have been also used as drugless therapies for thousands of years. They have a lot of health benefits far better than the vigorous exercises that often dominate in western workouts. Both of them are easier to practice on the body. They not only help build body muscles but also help to reduce disease symptoms. Both help flow of oxygen throughout the body, reduce depression and boost immunization. They burn the extra calories maintaining an optimum weight.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is the highest form of martial arts from ancient China. It is about graceful, meditative and light, natural movements of the body which enable to relax and stimulate every part of the body. It is based on the moving meditation set in motion by the constant interaction of the two vital energies, namely Yin the positive and Yang the negative. Tai Chi is known as the 'Mother of Martial Arts'.

What is yoga?

The word yoga means "to yoke" or to connect two entities. It makes an unbreakable connection between body, mind and soul. It challenges one to go deep into oneself trying to connect all these three aspects into one being through easy exercises. It ensures self discipline by pushing the body beyond the comfort level through body postures and helps the flow of Prana (just like Chi of Tai Chi) the life energy. It has six kinds of asana or physical postures that help good breathing.

Difference between Tai Chi and yoga

1) Tai Chi and yoga focus on the optimum health of body and mind. Tai Chi believes in movement exercises. Yoga is more focused on breathing and meditation. Even those who cannot move can do yoga exercises of meditation. But Tai Chi needs movements.

2) Originally developed as a martial art, Tai Chi looks like a graceful dance with slow movements. It concentrates mainly on the balance and harmony of the body.

3) Generally people perspire when they practice this art and the pulse rate comes down. But it need not be the case in Yoga. Tai Chi is more a defensive art that can attack and protect.

4) According to the philosophy of Tai Chi practice, the slow and fluid postures of Tai Chi focus concentration while they gently work on the muscles.

Both Tai Chi and yoga improve health in general. And unlike other forms of exercises with some health benefits, both of them are composed of gentle and flowing movements that are not difficult or dangerous for the body of any one including elders. Their therapeutical values are numerous with great results.
