Are We Growing Drug-addicted?

November 23, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 20   Category: Health    Views: 467

Our growing generation is trapped in so many ways. Globalization, fast communication, and the commercialization of human values are endangering humanity. When are we going to realize this?

It was lunch break. I was standing outside of our school compound waiting for my friend. Students were running here and there after their lunch. Suddenly I was shocked to find some unusual noise in a corner where many students gathered within seconds.

I was shocked to know that it was a secret business of marijuana.

Marijuana? In this remote school?

I stood stunned!

It is really a shocking fact that marijuana and other drug addictions are on the increase. It is threatening the world more dangerously than the terrorists. Actually terrorism has become a part of drug smuggling. Fast communication, globalization, commercialism and easy money shortcuts have increased the possibilities of drug usage all over the world.

Marijuana: An Illegal Killer

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. A dry, shredded green or brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa, it usually is smoked as a cigarette (joint, nail), or in a pipe (bong). As a more concentrated, resinous form it is called hashish and, as a sticky black liquid, hash oil. Marijuana smoke has a pungent and distinctive, usually sweet-and-sour odor. There are countless street terms for marijuana including pot, herb, weed, grass, widow, ganja, and hash. The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The membranes of certain nerve cells in the brain contain protein receptors that bind to THC. Once securely in place, THC kicks off a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to the high that users experience when they smoke marijuana.

It Begins As Fun

Statistics prove the growing trend of drug addictions. It soars like forest fires destroying the surroundings. It starts as a fun among children even before they step into their teenage. Peer groups just enjoy the fun of trying it which is easily available to them in different forms. Then slowly the fun sticks to them without which they find their life very uneasy. In 2001, over 12 million Americans age 12 and older used marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed. That is more than three quarters (76 percent) of the total number of Americans who used any illicit drug in the past month in 2001. Of the 76 percent, more than half (56 percent) consumed only marijuana; 20 percent used marijuana and another illicit drug; and the remaining 24 percent used an illicit drug or drugs other than marijuana.

Lately, young people have a new method for smoking marijuana: they slice open cigars and replace the tobacco with marijuana, making what's called a "blunt." When the blunt is smoked with a 40 oz. bottle of malt liquor, it is called a "B-40." It also is smoked in blunts, which are cigars that have been emptied of tobacco and refilled with marijuana, often in combination with another drug. Use also might include mixing marijuana in food or brewing it as a tea.

A Snare of Addiction

Marijuana addiction is a phenomenon experienced by more than 150,000 individuals each year who enter treatment for their proclaimed addiction to marijuana. Marijuana addiction is characterized as compulsive, often uncontrollable marijuana craving, seeking, and use, even when the individual knows that marijuana use is not in his best interest. Marijuana addiction could be defined as chronically making the firm decision not to use marijuana followed shortly by a relapse due to experiencing overwhelming compulsive urges to use marijuana despite the firm decision not to. This contradiction is characteristic of an addiction problem.

After Effects of Marijuana Addiction

Marijuana is both emotionally and mentally addictive. Once an individual becomes addicted to marijuana it develops into part of who they believe themselves to be. Avoiding their friends who do not use, the addict will gravitate to others that do. Marijuana is a topic that is always on their mind, whether it be thinking about the next time they will be able to get high or where their going to get their next sack. When someone is addicted to marijuana eventually their friends and the people close to them only know how they act when their stoned because they no longer do anything without first smoking. Their constant abuse is due to the misconception that marijuana is what they need to solve their problems. Sometimes addicts will take their stash with them wherever they go, just in case an opportunity arises and they are able to take a couple hits. They may even go through several dealers in order to make sure they always have a constant supply of marijuana.

Individual's Health Affected

Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs: The Good and the BadMarijuana and Society »Scientists have learned a great deal about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many effects. When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to organs throughout the body, including the brain. Areas of the brain with the most receptors affected by THC are parts of the brain that control pleasure, thought, memory, sensory, concentration, time perception, and coordination. It's these areas of the brain that are most likely to be affected when an individual faces marijuana addiction. Moreover, research has shown that marijuana's adverse impact on memory and learning can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off. Depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances are all associated with marijuana use.

Social Life Shattered

The marijuana addicts not only spoil themselves but also they shatter the lives of those who are around them. They may suffer health and social consequences, memory and learning problems, problems at work or even result in losing a job because of high absenteeism. Those who isolate themselves from friends and family often put a heavy strain on relationships with loved ones. There is a vicious cycle to marijuana addiction in which these problems are often used as a rational to smoke even more pot.

Symptoms of Marijuana Addiction

Continued marijuana use despite knowing it will cause significant problems.

Let Us Wage a War Against Drug Addiction

Our societies, especially our educational institutions and places of gatherings, are changing into market places of drugs! Day by day they are on the increase. Globalization, fast and selfish business and fastest exchange of ideas through the mass media are attracting our growing generation towards drugs.

There is no doubt that marijuana and other drugs will ruin the very foundations of human existence. Though it has been in use from prehistoric times, if we do not check this growing devil - the drug addictions- it will lead to the eradication of the whole humanity.

When are we going to realize this suicidal danger?
