Keep Green Pots and Kill Workplace Stress

Work is worship. But how can you perform well if you are squeezed by your workplace stress? Kill your workplace stress by keeping some green potted plants in your office.


In this tussling economic period, there is no wonder that many are finding it harder than ever to cope with stress in the workplace. Regardless of occupation, seniority, or salary level, most of the people are spending more and more of our work days feeling frazzled and out of control, instead of alert and relaxed. Troubled economy has become an emotional roller coaster for workers all over the world. "Recession," "layoffs" and "budget cuts" have become bywords in the workplace, and the result is increased fear, uncertainty, and higher levels of stress and diseases. Workplace stress is killing more and more people through various diseases than the actual work.

Although some stress is a normal part of the workplace, excessive stress can interfere with your productivity and take toll on your physical and emotional health. But relax, here is a way to kill workplace stress and refresh your work spot with flow of energy. A Sweden University has come up with an idea to reduce your workplace stress with potted plants on your desk.

Potted plants to reduce workplace stress

Your office room can reduce your stress and refresh you with boosted energy, if you keep some potted plants on your desk in your office. A new study reveals that the plants can pass fresh energy into the room and reduce your stress.

According to Daily Mail report, a team of researchers led by environmental psychology expert Tina Bringslimark at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and Uppsala University, Sweden, found that the presence of potted plants in offices reduced fatigue, stress, dry throats, headaches, coughs and dry skin among workers.

Another study conducted on 385 office workers could find out that there was much connection between the numbers of potted plants kept on the desks in office rooms and the sick-leave rates of the workers. The more potted plants the workers could see the less sick-leave they availed.
The researchers explained that plants and the microbes in their soil are good at removing volatile, organic compounds that can affect human health.

Bringslimark pointed out how potted plants could change the psychology of the workers. She said, "There could also be a psychological explanation in that people believe plants are healthier and are likely to evaluate their own health more optimistically. Bringslimark further revealed that foliage plants, or houseplants, may yield better results than flowering plants. The team stated that the foliage plants produce most oxygen and help decompose toxic substances in the air.

Another US research team led by Dr. Virginia Lohr, who conducted a similar project at Washington State University, said that common house plants can contribute to lower stress levels and outlined that foliage plants can reduce the level of dust in an office by 20%. They found out that when plants were present, workers were more productive and had a 12 percent quicker reaction time and that they were less stressed and had lower blood pressure.

Nowadays, the air conditioned office rooms do not have windows and enough air circulation. "Potted plants are particularly beneficial for such offices where workers do not have a window," says another report from Washington State University.

In the US research, workers completed timed computer tasks in rooms with and without plants. When plants were present, workers were more productive and had a 12 percent quicker reaction time. They were less stressed and had lower blood pressure.
