Eating refined sugar is one of the main causes of most of modern diseases. Today, refined sugar is added to all modern processed foods and this slow poisoning is not recognized by most of the people. It causes you mental illness and paves way to other health disorders.

Eating sugar is taking a heavy toll on the lives of people all over the world, especially in the US. Sugar consumption in the US is increasing more and more. So also increase of diseases of modern lifestyle. Statistics state that 32 percent of Americans are obese and an additional one-third are overweight. The obesity rate which had been 3.4 percent in 1890s reached 15 percent in 1975 and has doubled today.

Sweet poison in processed foods

Today, refined sugar is loaded into all of your soft drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks, and hidden in almost all processed foods, from bologna to pretzels or to Worcestershire sauce to cheese spread. Another shocking fact is that most infant formula has the sugar equivalent of one can of Coca-Cola and it is a well-known secret that modern babies are being metabolically poisoned from day one if taking formula. Consumption of refined sugar leading to obesity and overweight is growing fast like an epidemic in this country. No wonder, carrying excess weight increases the risk for deadly conditions such as depression, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes.

Sugar consumption leads to mental illness

Recent researchers have discovered that there is close association between sugar consumption and mental illness.

A British Journal of Psychiatry recently published a study of cross-cultural analysis, proving the strong correlation between refined sugar consumption and mental illness. Researchers revealed that a high national intake of refined sugar and dairy products had consistent connection between refined sugar intake and mental illnesses. Through higher intake of refined sugar they could predict a higher incidence of schizophrenia and increased prevalence of depression. They could also find out that higher consumption of pulses or whole grains or starchy root vegetables was linked to a lower prevalence of schizophrenia and depression.

Another research published in Neuroscience in 2002 found that high sugar diet reduces a key growth hormone in the brain necessary for memory and learning. More and more studies show that consumption of refined sugar plays a vital role in the incidence of mental illnesses.

How does refined sugar affect your brain?

Studies reveal that refined sugar consumption suppresses an important growth hormone in the brain which is called brain-derived neurotrophic factor or BDNF. This important hormone is very necessary for healthy function of the neurons in the brain. This neuron function is crucial for memory retention. This hormone is found to be in low level in patients with depression and schizophrenia.
