An experienced mother cautions parents of the modern world, "Just imagine your child is a kite. Let the child fly, but always hold on to the string." Parenting is long process of second labor pains after which you are happy to find your child a disciplined one. Implanting the values of life in a child is very important in parenting. It is a cautious journey. It is a joyful experience of exemplary and loving life.

Here are ten norms to help you in your parenting journey.

1) Set norms

First of all you should have a disciplined vision of life. Set norms in life and warn the children if those norms are breached bitter experiences would follow.

2) Disciplining is not to abuse but for better results

Discipline never means that the child should be threatened or abused. LOVE and not ANGER should be the source and means of disciplining a child. Disciplining should never proceed from anger, but should spring from love, genuinely wanting the child to improve.

3) Not punishment but discipline

Always use the word discipline and not punishment. It is an embrace of affectionate correction and not a thrashing punishment. Be convinced that love always wins. It is, of course, quite difficult to practice this concept.

4) Disciplining should be an immediate reaction

Disciplining should be immediately after the breaching of a norm or rule. Then only the child can understand its mistake.

5) Linked to the action of breach

Disciplining should be linked to the specific action of breaching. Otherwise the child may not be able to understand its mistake.

6) Level of disciplining should vary

Every time a particular rule is broken, the same level of disciplining should follow. If the offence is graver, more severe disciplining will be necessary.

7) Avoid favoritism

I find favoritism among many Indian parents favoring a son or daughter. Both father and mother should have equal responsibility in disciplining a child.

8) Empty threats never work

Empty threats never work in disciplining a child. Some parents say, "If you tell a lie again, you will be disciplined." If that disciplining is not done, the child will not take threats seriously and will lose credibility.

9) Do not give confusing signals

Trying to discipline the child from his perspective makes a big difference. A father, who is amused when his little son tears up an old newspaper, should not rap him when he tears up today's newspaper. If he does, the little fellow gets confusing signals.

10) Show affection after discipline

After disciplining the child and explaining to him why such action, cuddle him. Real love or affection works miracles.
