Modern life has become a battle field of tight competition. Unless the children have self esteem and protect themselves it is quite difficult to survive. The children have to be taught self worth or self-esteem from their tender days.
One of the important gifts that we should provide our children is the sense of self worth of self esteem. This is the confidence that enables the children to manage the situations. It is the confidence in their God-given talents and abilities, and the drive to actualize their potential. This is really a tough task. But it comes by learning.
Fifteen tips to teach the child the sense of self esteem
1) Let your child practice taking risks. As long as he does not expose himself to serious dangers, let him explore and learn things himself.
2) Do not encourage self-pity. For example let him not say or think, "I am not good at painting". Rather, encourage a positive outlook and remind him of successes he has had in other areas.
3) Encourage him develop his own interests. If he likes music, let him try on it. But see that he does not neglect other areas essential to his growth.
4) Make him realize his potential. Make him understand that the pursuit of excellence entails goal oriented labor and perseverance. His goal setting should be adjusted according to his capacity. The child should learn to win and lose gracefully. He should not be gloat when he wins and sulk when he loses. To help this he should be given tasks and his performance should be evaluated.
5) The child needs training of skills and constructive feedback. We should give the child regular coaching. We should honor his small requests and discuss the big ones. Even when a request is turned down the child should know that he is loved.
6) The child should understand that whining is not acceptable. Instead we should encourage him to honestly express his feelings. Discussion helps in this.
7) Make him learn to look at the goodness in people, and not at their weaknesses. Rough edges in his personality can be filed away by careful handling.
8) We should always encourage the child to foster up a sense of fairness in treating those who are around him, especially the less privileged.
9) The child should have the courage to apologize when he is wrong and forgive others when they are wrong.
10) The habit of praising and thanking others should be practiced from the beginning. Even small acts of kindness, either at home or outside, should be appreciated or thanked.
11) The child should understand that others in life are important. Remind him often that selfishness destroys character. One way of practicing this is sharing food, toys and other things that he calls 'mine'.
12) Tantrums should never be allowed. We must put an end immediately with some form of disciplining.
13) Behavior should have focus. Never discourage saying, "You are lazy. You should change" etc. When he obliges complement him.
14) Monitoring his TV time and the programs he watches is important. He should not become an addict. Check also his reading habits, internet sites, etc.
15) Always treat the child as person. Listen to him when he talks and respond him.
