Arthritis Awakened by Winter Weather

Arthritis is a pain in the joints of bones. It is awakened in winter by the cold weather conditions of winter. Variations in humidity also affect arthritis very much.

         

Winter brings with it many diseases and painful body conditions. Specific studies on the effects of barometric pressure on people with arthritis show that cold condition of weather is associated with causing more pain to arthritis patients. It affects people of all ages if their power of immunity is low.

Winter effects on arthritis

Winter affects every joint in the body with its cold and damp weather. Arthritis causes more pain and discomfort in winter than any other season. It cannot be relieved just by taking some painkiller tablets such as Ibuprofen.

Winter weather worsens arthritis

You might have heard people saying, "It is going to snow today; I feel it in my bones." Pain in the joint with inflammation is the symptom of Arthritis, a condition in which one or more joints are inflamed. Inflammation is nothing but reactions of the body against diseases and other odd conditions. It causes pain in the bone joint, sometimes accompanied with stiffness and swelling that can make moving difficult. Although there are over 100 different types of arthritis, the most common that affect people are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid and Gout.

Studies on arthritis people have shown that about 70 percent of people with arthritis are weather sensitive. Dave Terlizzi, director of the new Kimball Institute for Rehabilitative and Occupational Health Services, says, "Women and those with osteoarthritis may be more affected by weather changes than men and people with other types of arthritis."

Winter is not the direct agent of arthritis

Although weather is said to affect arthritis, actually it is not the weather that causes arthritis. It is the lack of immunization, poor blood circulation and other body conditions that worsen the situation of arthritis. Arthritis sufferers can follow the tips below to protect themselves from worsening of arthritis.

Tips to tackle winter arthritis

1) Wrap up arthritis areas with warm clothes

Dress plays vital role in keeping body warm. Hence the arthritis sufferers are advised to wrap up affected areas very well with warm clothes, especially the extremities. They should wear wearing warm socks and gloves and try to maintain the body temperature. Even inside the house, it is better for them to wear pants and long sleeves.

2) Keep moving

Cold weather condition restricts outdoor activities and even indoor movements. Escaping from cold weather does not mean escaping from exercises. Maintaining blood circulation by moving around is very necessary for arthritis patients.

3) Maintain the level of room temperature and humidity

By keeping the moisture at the same level, weather changes outside may not affect the arthritis people as much and a sudden increase in humidity and decrease in air pressure will not affect them inside.

4) Winter diet is also very important

Many people think that diet has nothing to do with arthritis. It is wrong. Arthritis sufferers should adopt a diet suitable to their winter health. They should avoid foods that increase uric acid. They can have a diet of cold water fish, skinless poultry, fruit and vegetables, grain products and unsalted nuts.
