Music has been an eternal phenomenon of humanity, even before the creation of man. It has great power to influence every living being, including plants. It can cure our body, mind and soul.


Music is an unfailing therapy. When all therapies start from the body and cure the ailments of the body and mind, music starts from the soul and cures the body and the mind. Plato said that no attempt should be made to cure the body without treating the soul.

Music is an ancient therapy

Music therapy is a very ancient one that has been used in all civilizations. It was an effective therapy in Egyptian, Greek and Sumerian civilizations. Aristotle has stated that music, especially flute music, would help people with a cathartic release of their inner emotions. Plato has described how music can restore the balance and harmony in the soul. He also has stated that it was ultimately responsible for the moral welfare of the nation.

Music heals

Music is not just an event of hearing something though your ears and nodding your head. It is a technique that has been accepted as a therapy. Recent researches have proved that music can reduce stress and help with physical and psychological healing. It has been shown that music has healing effect even on the subconscious mind. It is a medium for communication that can bring a pleasant and healing experience.

Ten benefits of music as therapy

1) Music reduces stress

Stress and depression are the greatest problems of the modern life. People feel plagued with work, family obligations, chores, and several other responsibilities. They are more and more becoming the victims of stress and depression. Listen to some slow music. It can reduce your stress and its consequences. Listening to the sounds of nature such as, ocean waves, chirping of birds, pouring rains, can also reduce your stress and tension.

2) Music can provide you good sleep

There are classical musics with certain scales that are called 'ragas' which have the power to give you sound sleep. The manifestation of waves and vibrations in music sound has many dimensions in a human and causes both positive and negative effects and so music can pacify the restless nerves leading to sleep apnea.

3) Music heals psychological and physical problems

Recent researches have discovered specialized use of music in treating persons with special needs in mental and physical health, rehabilitation and special education for physically handicapped. Music therapy has been proved successful in neurology patients, hyperactive children and children with abnormal behavior.

4) Music can give you a 'Sound bath'

Music therapy can provide rest and peace of mind as the modern man is struggling in today's crazy, hectic world, running after money and pleasure. Just try some relaxing music on your stereo sitting or lying in a comfortable position. You can wear headphones for a deeper experience and to focus your attention avoiding distractions.

5) Music walk is healthy

Walking with your favorite music playing on the walkman will help you very much to get the benefit of music. Just inhale and exhale in tune with the music. Let the rhythm of the music take you. This is a great stress reliever by combining your exercise of brisk walk, your imagery and music.

6) Music rhythm can regulate breathing

Human heart beats 72 times per minute. Music that has repeating or cyclical pattern is found to regulate the breathing system. Music with 72 beats can do wonders along with this breathing system. Music rhythm with its beatings can focus your attention on your breathing, letting it deepen, slow and become regular.

7) Music can create your moods

Music stimulates the pituitary gland, the secretions of which affect the nervous system and the flow of blood. This creates difference in your moods. The type of music you listen to can make a big difference in creating your moods. If you play a song that makes you feel angry, sad, irritating, anxious or frantic, then it is probably not all suitable to your health. However, if you take the time to sit back and listen to some classical or instrumental music, or play songs by some talented artists you can find yourself unwinding instantly.

8) Music heals diseases like ulcer, migraine, hypertension and blood pressure

Music has been an imperishable and inalienable asset of human beings. Human beings are susceptible to constant feelings like intense anxiety, fear, restlessness, anger and hatred. These emotions and feelings lead people to diseases like ulcer, hypertension, blood pressure which further cause other complications. Music has a wonderful effect on human behavior and activities and can heal these diseases, restoring the functioning of the liver.

9) Music acts like an anesthetic

Music can alleviate your pain either physical or mental and can promote your wellness. In a way it can be an anesthetic.

10) Music improves your work efficiency

Even during the course of working, hearing light music can improve work efficiency and yield good results. It can make you forget your worries and concentrate on your work. It can be considered even as a social therapy.
