Why Does India Oppose the Global Deal to Stop Pollution?

December 08, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 15   Category: Social    Views: 603

Three most important countries which pollute the earth most, including India, have refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol, a global deal that would force all stop carbon emission. The earth is facing a heavy damage because of pollution.

Pollution by carbon emission is dangerous. It is the main cause of global warming. Then why do these three big polluter countries, The United States, China and India, refuse to move toward a new legal commitment to curb their carbon emissions?

What is Kyoto Protocol?

Everyone knows the adverse results of global warming and its its effects on climate changes.
The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol proposed by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, aimed at fighting global warming. It is moving towards international environmental treaty with the goal of achieving the stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. It was named Kyoto Protocol since it was initially adopted on 11 December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan. So far 191 countries have signed and ratified the protocol. But it is very unfortunate that three major polluter countries, namely China, the United States and India, have refused to move toward a new legal commitment. In this condition the world cannot achieve a pollution-free earth.

Warning from the scientists

Scientists have strictly warned that greenhouse gas emissions need to peak and start falling by 2020 to avoid devastating effects, such as island countries being submerged and agricultural crops failing. They have pointed out so many other natural calamities the planet will have to face if steps to curb gas emission.

Universal attempts to move the Kyoto Protocol

1) UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon has deplored that the Durban meeting of almost 200 nations, meeting in the South African city of Durban, has no possibility of any success when these three major polluter countries oppose it.

2) The leading efforts of The European Union to keep alive the Kyoto Protocol, the only hope to tackle climate change and protect the earth, do not also succeed with these nations which are not ready to change their ways.

Why does India refuse to sign Kyoto Protocol?

1) China, the United States and India together are considered as major polluters because they make up nearly half of the world's carbon-dioxide emissions and they say that they have reasons for not wanting to be part of a new global deal.

2) These three countries are particular about any commitment on binding cuts until 2015. They state that this would give opportunity for further scientific review of the effects of climate change and work to measure the effectiveness of emissions.

3) They say that it would seriously affect the industries of the developing countries or poor countries. The rich countries have already filled the atmosphere with pollution and have become rich and so they are historically more responsible than the poorer nations.

4) India says that signing this Protocol at this stage would seriously affect her industrial development and she is already more backward in economy than China and other countries.

5) Jayanthi Natarajan, India's environment minister, has said that that India is considering the need of a further legal agreement, after assessing the actions of all under the 2015 review and look at the science.
